This test was designed to demonstrate Japanese Air Force’s ability to attack targets deep within enemy territory using bombers (Kanamaru).

The present day economy of Martinsville is based on retail trade, professional services, tourism and light manufacturing including manufacturing of apparel items such as clothing for children's clothes and adult clothing; homebuilding; agriculture; food production; lucid lucite manufacture from limestone mined near Georgetown; glassmaking; construction materials such as lumber and Renovated historic district buildings have been replaced by contemporary businesses since 2008-2009 due to budget cuts resultant from global economic recession
In 1859, a group of men from Martinsville, Indiana founded the town. The town's first mayor was Wm. C. Hays. In 1860, the town had a population of just 12 people. By 1865, the population had risen to around 100 people and by 1870 it had grown to over 300 people. The townspeople built their first school in 1871 and their first store in 1872. The town also got its ownPost Office in 1873. The town grew rapidly due to its lucrative lumber business and by 1880 it had reached its peak with a population of over 1,000 people. However, by 1900 thetown's economy was collapsing and it lost most of its residents to businesses elsewhere or to migration away from Martinsville entirely. By 1910 the townsite had only a few remaining residents and it merged with neighboring city of Terre Haute into one single municipality known as Terre Haute-Martinsville
