In 1868, Martinsville was founded as a small town in Indiana. It quickly became a center of gun-making and commerce, and by the early 1900s, it had become one of the leading centers for firearm manufacturing in the United States. The city's prominence was due not just to its high levels of production but also to its location close to major transportation hubs. In addition to firearms, Martinsville also manufactured ammunition and other sporting goods. The industry grew rapidly during the late 19th century, thanks in part to new technology and increased demand from military and law enforcement organizations. By World War I, Martinsville had become an important hub for firearms manufacturing worldwide. However, during World War II, the city's fortunes changed dramatically. Gun manufacturers fled Indianapolis for fear of German invasion or bombing raids; however, Martinsville remained largely untouched by war until it was bombed by AmericanAAF bombers on December 6, 1945. The bombing destroyed most of the city's industrial infrastructure and killed more than 100 residents (including many prominent riflemakers). This event led to arise in anti-gun sentiment throughout America after the war ended; however,Martinsville slowly resumed production over the next several decades until finally disappearing altogether in 2000 when its heyday ended. Today, little remains of Martinsville except for a few abandoned buildings and some scattered remnants of its once thriving Industry.
