Martinsville is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kosciusko County. The town was founded in 1824 by James Martins and his brother-in-law Nicholas Burtis. In 1830, he bought land adjoining his cabin and began to farming with horses and mules. By 1840, he had built a sawmill and gristmill on the White River at what is now known as Martin's Mill Road. In 1851, he married Anna Stephenson and moved his family to Martinsville. Anna operated her own store until about 1865 when she gave it up for operation by her son-in-law Fenton Stephenson III as a grocery store. In 1881, Fenton Stephenson III donated land for a school site that would become Martinsville High School. Construction began in 1882 but only two classrooms were completed before school was discontinued due to financial reasons. The school reopened in 1886 after being moved from its original location on state Route 20 east of town to its current location on State Road 362 north of town. At this time, it also became part of District V (now Knox County) which included all of central Indiana except Forks Township which remained within Tippecanoe County until 1907 when it became part of Marion County By 1913, there were only three residents living in Martinsville: Mr A J Mahoney (postmaster), Mrs E G O'Donnell (cook) and Mr W H Smith (smith). That year Dr J C Barger opened a general store next door which lasted until 1928 when it closed because Ofrce No 8 shut down during prohibition era because alcohol sales were not allowed without special license On July 1st 1917 citizens tried to start a library service but they met with no success On November 4th 1922 the post office changed hands from Mrs O'Donnell to Miss L H Roper leaving behind Mrs Mahoney who operated it for several years before selling it back to Mr Mahoney .
