During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Battle Creek Road crossed White River near present day Martinsville to supply General Ulysses S Grant's army with food and munitions. In 1814, the first settlers in what is now Martinsville, Indiana, arrived. They were led by a man named Daniel Boone and his brother John. Daniel had been appointed surveyor for the area that includes present-day Martinsville. The Boones were among the first white people to live in what is now Martin County.
