Marion, Indiana is a small town located in the northwest corner of the state of Indiana. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. Marion was founded in 1814 by General David Dixon and named for his wife, Martha Ann Dixon. It became a city in 1925. The community takes its name from General James Wilkinson who fought in the Mexican-American War and also served as Superintendent of Schools in Indianapolis. George Washington Carlin made Marion his home when he moved to Indiana from Ohio in 1922. He died there two years later and is buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery. In 2000, President Bill Clinton awarded Marion with an honorary degree from Ball State University. In 2002, Mrs. Clinton presented her husband with an honorary doctorate from Purdue University on account of their shared interest in education reform issues during their time as presidents. The town has also been honored with plaques recognizing its distinction as a “City of Opportunity” by the National Women’s Law Center and by the Mayor’s Commission on Poverty Reduction and Economic Development initiative within the City Councilman Office (2006).

There is little known about the history of Marion, Indiana. One reason may be that the community has remained relatively unrecorded throughout its history. The town was first settled in 1811 by a group of Methodist ministers who arrived on the Indy Trail from Illinois. It was not until after Indian Removal in 1830 that any permanent residents set foot in what is now Marion. The first white settler in present-day Marion was James Auld, who arrived in 1814 and established a farm near what is now downtown. The next year, John Pritchard opened a small store at the junction of State Road 3 and White River Road. In 1817, Simon Gillett platted what is today downtown as part of his pattern of developing rural land south of Indianapolis with an eye to becoming a cotton plantation center. Most of what is now Marion was developed between 1840 and 1860 during this time period when slavery was abolished in Indiana Territory and new markets for cotton were opening up across the Midwest. Many early settlers worked on plantations such as those operated by Simon Gillett or John Pritchard before moving into urban areas to start their own businesses or become involved with politics or government service. In 1865, when Confederate General Robert Ewell attempted to cross over the river into Indiana from Kentucky, he encountered resistance from local militia units commanded by Captain David Hendrickson and Colonel Elijah Hickson (fathers of Mayor David Hendrickson). After several days of skirmishing, Ewell withdrew without achieving his objectives – an event which left a lasting impression on both men. Alderman John Fenton served as mayor for many years before being elected mayoralty-less for one term in 1978; he returned to office two years later when city council members placed him third on their mayoral ballot list behind Mayor Dave Bratty and then-Councilman Tim McKenna (D). Elected as an Independent candidate for Ulysses S Grant’s last term as president following Abraham Lincoln’s death, Hendrickson unsuccessfully ran against Bratty for reelection in 1872; he would serve as mayor again three times between 1875 and 1895 before retiring at age 85 due to health issues. At age 96 years old, he remains one of only two mayors ever to have held office beyond 100 years old (the other being Mayor Leonard Petroski). Hendrickson also served on various state committees during his career including serving twice as chairman of the committee responsible for setting tax rates within the state senate before dying suddenly at age 82 while serving on that body; he had been active politically since hewas just 27 years old when he first took office as colonel commanding all Union troops west OF Fort Wayne . It is said that the area now known as Marion was first settled by the Potawatomi in the early 1800s. In 1825, General Anthony Wayne and his army invaded Indiana and encountered the Potawatomi at what is now Fort Wayne. The battle resulted in a decisive victory for Wayne, who became anHero of War. The area around present-day Marion was annexed by Indiana in 1827, making it one of the state's earliest counties. The county seat of Marion County was moved to Terre Haute, IN in 1871 after Terre Haute became a city. However, much of what is today Marion County had been part of Lafayette Township since its creation in 1786.
