Marion, Indiana is a town in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in Marion were Frenchmen and their Indian allies who arrived in 1698. The first white man to settle in what is now Marion was Andrew Jackson who built the first cabin in 1799. In 1810, John Covington established a trading post on the White River near present-day Kendallville. By 1815, most of Kosciusko County had been organized into townships with one exception which was still being developed as Marion until it became a town on July 1, 1865. In 1827, David Glass arrived from Kentucky with his family and began clearing land for a mill on the White River. soon after he started to build churches and other buildings including a jail which stood today on Main Street just east of US 11/12 highway (now I-465) and several homes also remain standing today including Mrs Glass House (1828), Mr Glass House (1829), Mrs Hanks House (1830), Post Office Building (1841), Masonic Temple(1902), Stonington Methodist Episcopal Church (1905) and many more since then! A gristmill called "the Old Mill" operated from about 1840 until it closed around 1910 when the waterworks came online making grinding much easier for farmers across Kosciusko County! Marion's rich history can be traced back to its incorporation as a town on July 1st 1865 under law No 1224; "An Act To Establish A Town In Kosciusko County." Later that year saw the opening of The Presbyterian Hospital where many patients would go for treatment such as minor operations or childbirths until 1948 when it became an ambulance station! After years of growth and development by both citizens and local businesses alike; Main Street became home to many businesses like Ford’s Department Store(1963) & Piggly Wiggly grocery store(1974). Today we continue to experience some great retail history like Ross Dressers Shoes(2006) & Bass Pro Shops(2007)! Civic leaders have helped shape this small but spirited community over time such as Mayor Tom Kappler who has been mayor 3 times consecutively starting in 2002 thru 2018; Treasurer Jeff Carlson who served 2 terms consecutively beginning March 4th 2011 thru February 28th 2020; Trustee Tony Velez who served 3 terms consecutively beginning October 15th 2017 thru September 30th 2021 and Clerk Jonathon Wenger whose term runs through December 2021

In 1838, the first white person to live in Marion County was John S. Goodrich. The Goodrich farmstead is still standing and is a contributing property to the city of Indianapolis. In 1853, the county seat moved from Merrill to Marion and remains there today. Marion was founded as a town on the site of what is now the downtown area of Indianapolis in 1851. It grew rapidly due to its location and became an important transportation hub for Indiana's agricultural production. The town sprung up around a canal that connected two large rivers in central Indiana; this made Marion one of the most important transportation hubs in Indiana at the time. The first courthouse in Marion was built on Indian Hill Road in 1861; it served as the county seat until 1865 when it moved to downtown Indianapolis. The building was replaced by a new courthouse which opened in 1967 and still serves as the county courthouse today. The city of Indianapolis emerged from Marion County during the late 19th century thanks to its booming agricultural industry and growth in trade with other states. Indianapolis quickly became one of America's leading cities, becoming home to some of the largest businesses and industries in North America including Eli Lilly & Co., Ford Motor Company, Armstrong Rubber Company, United States Steel Corporation, Wrigleyville Dairy Products Company, Interstate 5 (now I-5), and many more smaller companies over time.
