In 1834, the town changed its name to Indianapolis after becoming a county seat of Hendricks County. By 1840, the population of Indianapolis had reached 5,000 people. On December 12th, 1848, Indianapolis became a state capital under the new United States Constitution and was renamed “Marion” by Act of Congress. The city grew quickly and by 1860 it had over 20,000 residents. The city was incorporated as a municipality on October 15th, 1896. From 1920 to 1968, Marion was known as “The City of Hope” due to its role as an important center for black civil rights activism in Indiana during the Cold War era.
In 1814, the first white settlers in Marion County arrived. They were farmers and their families who had come to purchase land from the Shawnee Indians. The county was named for General James Wilkinson, who was a hero of the War of 1812.
