Today, Marion remains an agricultural community with some businesses still based there but it is not considered an important historical or cultural entity like other larger towns in Wayne County
Marion, Indiana was founded in 1814 by General James Wilkinson. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the new Ohio River and its access to trade with the east. In 1831, Marion was incorporated as a village. In 1865, it became a city and was renamed after Dr. Edwin L. Marbury Jr., one of the founders of the United States Medical Association.
