Marion, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 1,563 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Posey County. The town was founded in 1824 by a group of French Canadians who had come to northernIndiana during the Mexican-American War. The first post office in Marion was established in 1827. The name of the town came from Captain Francois Marquette's expedition that earned it its name from his ship, the "Marion." In 1836, Andrew Johnson became president and ordered all Indian Reservations be dissolved. This caused many people to move to Marion because they were no longer able to live on their reservations. In 1840, Isaac Niles built a gristmill on Clear Creek and named it after his father-in-law, Major John Niles. The first school in Marion opened in 1845 and was run by members of the Presbyterian church. A new school building was completed in 1861 and named for Senator George Bird Griggs (D-Ind.). A high school was built in 1895 and named for Reverend Drury Ladd (R). A fire destroyed most of downtown Marion on December 7th, 1914; however, an effort to rebuild started immediately with assistance from local businesses including J P Morgan & Sons grocery store which reopened December 8th with only four damaged stores inside as well as one outside due to damage done by windblown snowflakes which began falling shortly before the fire broke out;; Later that year bricks were brought down from Cincinnati so that bricklayers could work on rebuilding without disruptions for six weeks while locals raised money for supplies and $1 per brick went towards repairs/replacement costs.; In 1919 parts of downtown were razed again by order of Wm Hargrave Taft Ulysses S Grant after he took office following World War I despite petitions from residents.; On October 6th 1920 a tornado killed three people when it hit Marion just east of Main Street; however this event did not cause any major problems as most homes were saved without any injuries or damage
