The name Marion comes from the Ojibwe word "marīn" meaning "place where deer live." Indian land west of present-day Marion was granted to French colonists by France in 1763 as part of the Treaty of Paris following the Seven Years' War. In 1814, when it became part of Indiana, it was named for General David Wilkinson who had fought in that war. The first Europeans to reach what is now Marion were French traders and soldiers led by Captain François de Lacrosse in 1765. They discovered a river system which they called "the Mississippian", but no evidence has been found to support this claim. A post office was established at Marion on October 12, 1812, and remained open until it was discontinued on December 15, 1886. In 1814, when it became part of Indiana Territory under the Act of March 3, 1815 (31 USC § 321), Marion was named for General David Wilkinson who had fought in that war while serving with militia under Colonel John Cavanaugh near Fort Dearborn. He donated land east of present-day town center to become a township; this township formed much later as Shelby Township (now parts of Powell and Uniontown). One early settler from Marion was Drury Ewing who arrived around 1800AD with his family from Virginia.* He built an early log cabin on what is now Main Street south of downtown* The first store opened upcontaining groceries and hardware near today's intersection between State Road 2nd Avenue/State Road 408W (now State Road 424)and Highways 6th Avenue/US Highway 301W.* This location served as a grocery store until 1906 when First National Bank moved into its current building located just east off East Washington Street adjacent to today's DTE EnergyCenter complex north side across I-465 from P & G Grocery Store

In 1840, the population increased to one hundred fifty two people and it remained at that level until 1850 when it increased to one hundred seventy four people. The peak of the growth period came between 1860 and 1870 when the population reached one thousand five hundred twenty three people. However, from 1870 until 1880, the population decreased steadily due to changes in Indiana state government which resulted in a decrease in opportunities for farmers.
