In the early 1900s, Marion, Indiana was a thriving agricultural town that had a large population of farmers and their families. The town's economy relied on raising livestock, manufacturing goods, and selling goods from home. One of the most important businesses in the town was a grocery store. The store's owner, Mrs. Anna Bechtold, became known for her ability to find the best prices on optical appliances and accessories. In 1907, Mrs. Bechtold opened an additional grocery store in downtown Marion called The Crystal Palace. This store was one of the first in the area and it sold popular optical products such as telescopes and microscopes. Mrs. Bechtold also began selling various types of equipment used for photography including cameras and lenses. She advertised her products using posters that were hung around town. Mrs. Bechtold also hosted monthly photo exhibitions at her house which displayed local photographers' work. These exhibitions helped to promote local photography within Marion and help to attract new customers to her store. By 1920, Mrs. Bechtold had closed both her stores in downtown Marion and moved them to larger quarters near Interstate 45 in central Marion County. She continued to sell optical products until she retired in 1970."

It is the smallest community in Butler County and home to only two businesses: a grocery store and a bank. The history of Marion can be traced back to 1814 when French traders founded Fort Dearborn on the banks of the White River at what is now known as Marion Township. In 1824, they named their new settlement after Anne-Marie Marquette, who had explored this area previous year with her husband Pierre Le Moyne de La Salle and his brother-in-law David Griffiths). In 1830, Lafayette County was organized from parts of Hamilton and Dearborn counties; Marion became one of its six townships (along with Terre Haute, Vincennes, Noblesville, Greenfield Junction and New Albany). At that time it consisted of just over 500 residents. When road construction began in the early 20th century, settlers traveled by wagon train from Springfield or Indianapolis to reach Marion on Saturday night for trade goods then return home on Sunday morning before continuing their journey downriver all week long. By World War II, rail transport had replaced wagon trains as the primary means for people to reach Marion; today's buses serve as an alternative transportation service connecting downtown with much smaller villages along the White River Valley corridor eastward into Indiana University's Bloomington campus area. In 1949–50 when Crystal City Elementary School opened in neighboring Terre Haute following several years of planning by school board members chaired by Mrs. Gertrude Haas (wife of local dentist Dr., George Haas), it became one of only two schools in Butler County open to students age 3 through grade 12; other public schools were operated by private companies such as Child’s Play Place (now called Mayfield Elementary School) or Keystone Schools Corporation which operated many rural public schools across Butler County during this time period including approximately 60% nonacademic children attended these schools either day or evening classes outside regular school hours! On October 1st 1957 voters passed a resolution authorizing annexation into Howard Township effective November 2nd following deliberations by township trustees subsequent meeting held on September 15th following recommendation from surveyors! The first graduates from Crystal City Elementary School graduated on December 6th 1957! We are proudest educators ever!!
