Logan became commander of all Union troops in West Virginia when he succeeded General Robert E Lee following his death at Bull Run Field on August 29th 1861.: The war ended with the surrender of Confederate General Joseph Johnston on April 9th 1865.: After the war ended Reconstruction began which led to mass African American migration into Indiana starting in 1868.: Marion recorded its first census for white people in 1880 which revealed that there were only 2 families living here out of a population of 10,000: : Beginning in 1890s Marion County experienced significant growth due to large-scale immigration from Hungary (mostly through Puskás family businesses) as well as from Bohemia (mainly through factories around town). These waves of immigrants created new jobs and increased social tensions within mostly Protestant rural towns such as Terre Haute and Crawfordsville.: Census data also reveals that although black Americans outnumbered whites both percentage wise and absolute terms during this time period they nonetheless held minor representation within counties like Marion where most citizens were white Irish or Germans.: However during prohibition years(1920s-1930s) many black Americans did move into these communities becoming Liquor Control Board employees or jazz musician/ownershops such as Spottswoode’s Lounge located across from Terre Haute’s Masonic Temple down Pennsylvania Avenue!:
In 1821, the United States government established a territorial government in Marion County. The county seat was at Terre Haute, and land grant deeds were issued to various families who would live there for a number of years. In 1835, the Indiana General Assembly created the county by splitting Knox County into two counties based on population size: Marion and Posey. The new county was named after Brigadier General George Washington Marion, who had been killed in action during the War of 1812.
