Marion, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Marion County, Indiana, United States. The population was 547 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The history of Marion begins with three pioneer families: The Wickershams, Beavers, and Pappas. In 1871, John Denton bought land from the Pappas family for $5 per acre. He named his new town after his mother-in-law's birthplace in France—Aigues-Mortes (Amber Hills). A post office was established in 1872, and by 1880 it had over 150 residents. In 1907, the railroad company built a depot on the east side of town to serve as its main station; this depot remains there to this day. A second post office operated until 1914 when it was discontinued due to lack of customers. In 1925, Marion became an incorporated city under state law; at that time it had a population of 2,500 people and consisted only of its downtown core. In 1961–1962, Indianapolis Mayor Richard Mankiewicz ordered all public works projects be stopped due to funding shortages caused by the American Civil War veteran Bonus Scandal; however, many private businesses continued with their usual operations during these difficult times. When Mankiewicz resigned in November 1962 after being indicted on bribery charges (later dropped), trustees elected Dave Kilduff as mayor instead which led to increased tensions between Kilduff's administration and business owners who felt they were not being given fair treatment by the newly appointed mayoralty team. As result of increasing tension within Marion City government and business circles known as "the Kilduff years", much progress has been made since then towards restoring normalcy within both municipalities without any further issues ariseing such as budget deficits or public Works projects going beyond what was originally planned

In 1786, the first permanent settlers arrived in Marion County. The area became a part of the United States in 1815 when it was admitted as a state. In 1817, Marion County was renamed to Jennings County after James Jennings, one of the original settlers. On January 1, 1827, Jennings County was divided into two parts: Hendricks and Decatur Counties. On March 1, 1830, both Hendricks and Decatur Counties were combined into one new county named Marion.
