The county's growth and development continued until the early 20th century; during this time it experienced dramatic changes including white flight to Urban areas in search of jobs and opportunities (the " Indianapolis Famine"), waves of migration from rural to urban areas (the "Migration Period"), and major transformation in its political landscape with the advent of Prohibition (1912-1920).During these years Marion also saw many significant civic developments including: 1) The first public high school opened in Marion in 1892; 2) The first library system was established in Marion County in 1907; 3) The first hospital opened for medical treatment in Marion County on November 15, 1912; 4) The first electric streetlight was installed in Marion County on October 2, 1915; 5) First professional wrestling match ever held at a local arena took place on December 8th, 1916 between Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney; 6) Fourth Street Bridge was built over the Indianapolis River between downtown Indianapolis and northside neighborhoods around present day North Side Boulevard/Uptown Place during 1922-1924 project financed by industrialist George Eastman which connected downtown with Northwestern suburbs east of I–65 across Monon Avenue
In 1847, the first store in Marion was opened by John W. Eaton and his brother-in-law, Daniel J. Dickinson. The Eaton brothers were the original owners of the business. The store became a general store, and later included a Clothing Store. In 1868, the family sold their business to James S. Clark and his wife Lucilla. At that time, it was one of three stores in Marion; the other two being the Wholesale House andthe Exchange grocery store which closed in 1902. The Clarksons continued to operate Marion's second store until 1916 when they sold it to Harry Acheson and his wife Nellie who operated it until 1951 when it closed again because of poor sales records. In 1922, Mrs Acheson reopened her old store as an expanded departmental market with more than 12 departments including kitchen supplies, home hardware, clothing items, automobile parts, cigarettes and candy bars along with a bakery/cake shop on the ground floor providing evening snacks for customers during day hours while also serving as a mother-in-home service for elderly residents living on their property during evening hours. Marion's third store opened in 1954; this time becoming known as "The Plaza" due to its location at First Avenue and State Street near downtown Marion.]]
