In 1814, when the United States of America was founded, Indiana was part of the new country. The land that is now Marion County was first settled by Indian people in the early 1800s. In 1821, the land was sold to a group of Ohio pioneers who named it for General George Armstrong Custer. The first post office in Marion County was established in 1827. When the American Civil War began, many residents of Marion County sided with the Union side and many farms were destroyed or passed out of use. In 1865, after President Abraham Lincoln ordered all southern states to give up their slave systems, some residents decided to stay put and keep their slaves while others left for northern states. By 1870, only a few hundred people remained in Marion County and most of what remains today is agricultural land.
