I was born in Marion, Indiana on January 15th, 1962. I grew up outside of Indianapolis, and my parents are both retired schoolteachers. After high school I attended Ball State University where I majoring in political science and minoring in English. I worked as a research assistant at the Center for American Progress (CAP) until my graduation in 1986. In 1986, I moved to Washington D.C., working as an aide to Congressman John Dingell (D-MI). After two years there, I returned to Ball State and completed my undergraduate degree in 1989 with a degree in international relations. In 1990, I graduated from Ball State with a master’s degree in public administration and governance from Georgetown University “with distinction.” I began my career as an administrator at CAP before being promoted to deputy director of the Division of Policy Studies within the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). While at OMB, I played a key role in developing the President’s budget proposal which became law under President George H.W. Bush. From 2003-2004, I served as Deputy Director for Planning and Evaluation within OMB’s Directorate of Federal Budget Management (DFBM), responsible for developing policy recommendations that support overall management objectives within DFBM's portfolio areas including economic development; infrastructure planning; center city neighborhoods; education reform; homeland security; women's issues; alcohol abuse prevention/treatment programs; counterterrorism enforcement mechanisms; and other related matters

Today, Marion is a vibrant community with multiple cultural organizations and businesses that support local commerce and services.
In 1814, the area now known as Marion was part of the Shawnee Nation. In 1817, white developers began purchasing land in what is now Marion County. The first courthouse in that county was built in 1820. The county seat was moved to Terre Haute in 1827, and the present-day county seat was established at Indianapolis on December 12, 1837.
