As a result of its contributions to both American culture and wartime efforts, Marion has been honored by numerous awards over the years!

In 1814, the community of Marion was founded by James H. Harrison and his wife, Catharine. The town was named for General Marion who had fought in the American Revolution. The first post office was established in 1817 and within a few years the community had developed into a small village with a population of about 50 people. In 1830, the section of town that now includes Indianapolis was annexed to Marion and the population grew to over 100 people by 1840. The first school in Marion opened in 1835 and soon there were also several churches and businesses located in the village. By 1860, Marion had reached its peak as an agricultural center with more than 500 acres of landowner’s land cultivated. However, during this time period development slowed due to lack of investment and competition from other villages around the area. In 1871, Indian Territory was created when Indiana became a state and part of it became known asIndian Territory along with much of today’s Kansas City region including Marion County. This meant that many white farmers moved out of Indiana into what is now Oklahoma or Texas which left behind large amounts of farmland uncultivated. As Indian Territory shrank in size over time, so too did its market potential for agriculture which led to reduced production at most farms in Marion County by World War I. The population decreased even further after World War I until it peaked at just under 200 inhabitants in 1920 before declining again throughout the 1930s due to new economic opportunities brought about by World War II (and later through Interstate Highway 80). Afterward, there were periodic reductions in household numbers until finally reaching its current low level (around 100 residents) during the early 21st century.
