The town of Marion, Indiana is located in the eastern part of the state. The population was 24,953 at the 2010 census. The town is named for General Andrew J. Marion who fought in the American Revolution and was a hero to many. In 1829, General Marion laid out a town site on land that he had purchased from the government of Canada. The first settler in Marion was John Condon who arrived in 1833. By 1840, there were over 100 people living in Marion. In 1845, Colonel David Ladd moved his family to Marion from Illinois and began developing land around the community. By 1850, there were over 150 buildings in Marion with a population of 400 people. Indian wars and disease drove away most of the settlers but by 1860, there were only 10 people living in Marion due to drought and lack of food production within the area. In 1865, Captain James Harker arrived with settlers from Ohio Territory and founded what would become Harkertown on land that he had purchased from General Andrew J. Marion. This settlement would grow rapidly due to its location near railroad tracks which made it easy for goods to be transported into and out of Indiana without having to go through other states or crossings rivers

The area that now includes Marion was first occupied by the Ottawa people and then by other tribes before being taken over by British colonists in 1763. In 1814, when American forces invaded Indian Territory, General James K. Polk established Fort Wayne as a military outpost to keep away Native Americans who had been raiding US settlements. In 1828, during a period of turmoil leading up to Mexican independence, General Richard Mims erected a fort here and called it Fort Wayne after President Andrew Jackson’s Vice President Darius Hogue. After Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, Fort Wayne became an important center for trade with Mexico and also served as a refuge for American travelers who were escaping lawlessness in western Texas and California. In 1825-26, local farmers began growing corn and wheat which led to development around town square known today as Cannon Square or simply “Square One” because of its prominence at this time. On July 4th, 1830, when Indiana becomes a state following the National Constitution Amendment process defined by popular referendum (see article), Fort Wayne became one of its original counties within Indiana Territory. At this time there were only six townships within Indiana Territory: Western Territorial Township (now Evansville), Eastern Territorial Township (now Indianapolis), Donnelly County (now Dearborn County), Harrison County (now Terre Haute County), and Union County (now Kosciusko County). As county seat for all these new counties it functioned as an intermediate point between central government at Indianapolis and individual settlers living near it or inside its boundaries In 1861, when Confederate troops sacked Fort Donelson on the Tennessee River while attempting to retreat from Gettysburg Campaign they destroyed much of what is now downtown Marion including Square One which stands today as an reminder of that event In 1870-71 local farmers started growing cotton; however this crop did not take off until after railroads reached town square where warehouses were built to store goods produced locally During World War II many employees worked at Kaiser Aluminum Works located just northwest of town square In 1948-49 Marion's Civic Center was completed; however much work still needs to be done such as restoring old buildings In 1957-58 construction began on what is now known as South Park Drive which connected town square with south side streets Marion was incorporated into neighboring Terre Haute County on March 15th 1959 . On December 3rd 1961 Mayor/Councilman Julius Crouch proposed annexation by Corydon Township reducing population from 24357 residents to 20354 residents making Marion borough status
In 1816, a group of Indiana men, led by Colonel Andrew Jackson, traveled to what is now Marion County in order to purchase land from the Shawnee Indians. The group was successful in their purchase and founded the town of Marion on August 12th of that year. In 1819, a larger group of Indiana men (led by Colonel John C. Frémont) traveled to Marion County in an attempt to establish a trading post with the Shawnee Indians. This failed and the men returned home. However, they left behind a small village called Fort Dearborn which still exists today.
