In 1907, it became an independent city and remained so until 1990 when it merged with Terre Haute to form Indianapolis. The first settler in what is now Madison was Denton Robinson on December 15, 1777. He built a cabin on what is now the corner of State and Quarry Streets about two miles east of present-day Madison. Robinson's cabin served as the nucleus for future Madison settlements because he had no land himself and relied upon others to provide him with food and shelter during his early days in this locality. Boyd & Harper erected their log house near where they now stand on July 5th 1814 while hunting white deer with Major John Floyd hunting over their heads from a rise up around 100 yards southwest (now State Street) of their house [1]. This location would become home to many later settlers including General George Rogers Clark who winterized here in 1840 during his retreat from Fort Wayne after Battle Of Ziegler [2]. A wagon road which connected the fort at New Albany with Terre Haute ran through this area early 1800’s making access easy for goods transported inland from both cities [3]. In 1830-1831 James Hines platted what is today parts of downtown Terre Haute using Lots 11 & 12 on the northeast side (northwest corner)of Bear Creek Road extending southeast from present day Monroe Street between First Avenue (now Washington Boulevard)and Second Avenue (now Elm Grove Drive). This plat also included lots 4 & 5 along Delaware River opposite current day US 54 just north of Northwestern University [4], thus laying out neighborhoods that still exist today including: North Side – east side near Monroe Street; South Side – west side near State Street; East Side – northwest corner near Third Avenue; West Side – northeast corner near Illinois Highway 36
