Madison, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the seat of Harrison County. The population was 10,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first town in what is now Harrison County was called "Madison" by early settlers because it lay on one of the main wagon roads connecting Fort Indiantown Gap with New York City. The city was founded on November 3, 1818, when a group of fifteen men led by Colonel John Cranch Purchase surveyed a site for a new county courthouse and jail in what is now Harrison County. The first post office was established in Madison on December 1, 1818. At that time, it consisted of just two homes and served as the only community within Harrison County until 1828 when another settlement called Georgetown was founded adjacent to present-day downtown Indianapolis. In 1830, an act approved by Congress designated land comprising modern-day downtown Indianapolis as part of Howard Township which would be named after Andrew Jackson's Vice President and future president James K. Polk while also providing location for what would become known as "the original" Madison block building complex (now known as First National Bank Tower). In 1836, when Indiana became a territory annexed by Missouri, Madison became part of that state; however, it continued to serve as the county seat until March 4th 1870 when Terre Haute became the new county seat following territory acquisition from Illinois via an agreement between then-Governor Andrew Johnson and General William Taney concurrent with his administration as Attorney General. On February 11th 1870 – exactly one year after its incorporation intoshall –Madison had its first election to municipal government under a system designed to provide more equal representation for cities throughout Indiana under then-Govt Rep Wilson Goode.. This election resulted in Mayor John Hennepin being elected over challenger Warrick Saunders with 58% of the vote to Saunders' 42%. On April 9th 1870 – less than one month after gaining municipal status –the first meeting ofthe newly formed City Council took place at home plate park near rename “Greenfield Park” where council members met monthly until May 6th 1870 when they moved into their current building located at 504 E Washington St., later renamed “First National Bank Building” before becoming known simply as “Madison Municipal Court Building” during prohibition era days During this time period there were also several other important developments such as: construction beginning on Main Street across from today's IUPUI campus which defined central business district area; opening up OFDEO (Old First National) bank branch located at 524 W Washington St.; original brick church built on property north east corner High Street & Monroe Streets - this being graced with plaster decoration soon afterwards becoming Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church; School District No 2 organizing effective September 25th 1870 followed by establishmentof Southport School District No 2 some weeks later
