Thanks in part to this growth, Madison was renamed by Governor James Wickersham in 1901 as "the State Capital" for his efforts to promote statewide political stability through increased government spending. The success of Madison's downtown area led to requests for more land around town, which resulted in construction of some beautiful new structures such as City Hall and High School (now Purdue University). During World War II, Madison played host to many large military exercises providing valuable experience for local troops. After America's entry into World War II,Madison experienced significant growth as businesses began moving back into town after years spent outside during wartime travel restrictions. However, when Interstate 95 were constructed just north of town in that same decade,Madison lost much if not all its prominence as a commercial center due largely to competition from larger Indianapolis neighborhoods southbound on I-465
Madison was founded in 1826 as a small village on the east bank of the Danube River. It grew rapidly and by 1830, it had become an important town on the Indiana state line. In 1836, Madison became the capital of Indiana.
