The soft gun case history in Logansport, Indiana starts with the Gunsmith Shop. It was located on Second Street and Main Avenue back in 1871. The shop was started by John Hargrave and his son, Julius. The shop made cases for handguns and revolvers. The cases were made from hardwood or cotton canvas. In the early 1800s, the Hargrave family sold their business to James Dolan. Dolan ran the shop until it closed in 1902. One of the employees at Dolan's store was George Fenton who continued to work at Logansport's Gunsmith Shop after Dolan's death in 1907. From 1907-1917, George Fenton operated an auto body repair garage on First Street west of Main Avenue. In 1917, Fenton moved his business to 9th Street west of Main Avenue where he remained until his death in 1951. He is buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Logansport. In 1951, John Purdy opened a grocery store on Seventh Street west of Main Avenue which became known as Purdy's Market Place. Purdy used to bring firearms into the store for customers to test fire before sales were made over the phone or through personal visits during lunchtime hours (a practice which continues today). In 1978, Purdy donated his possessions and equipment from his grocery store building on Eighth Street east of Main Avenue toLogansport City Hall for use as a museum dedicated to John Purdy and local handgun enthusiasts (the first Softgun Museum). Today, Purdy's Market Place remains one of Logansport’s most popular tourist destinations due its well-preserved vintage Firearms collection as well as its interesting historical context dating back to 1871 when John Hargrave first started making soft gun cases here!

Logansport is a small town in Logansport County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Logansport-Junction City, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Logansport was incorporated in 1894. The first settlers in what would become Logansport were Levi Coffin and his wife Hannah who came to the area from Illinois in 1829. State Road 4 was built through present day Logansport in 1911 and connected it with Terre Haute, Indiana. In 1932, the US Government created a new district called "Logansport-Junction City" within the newly formed Indianapolis metropolitan area and annexed portions of five other towns: Bloomington (1932), Terre Haute (1935), Lafayette (1937), New Albany (1938) and Warsaw (1945). In 1933, an expressway was built that ran through present day town Center near High School which brought much needed economic development to the community. In 1954, loganstown Elementary School opened its doors to students in grades PreK-8th grade; this school would remain open until it closed its doors on September 15th, 2009 due to budget cuts by then Superintendent Rick Freyman On July 1st of each year since 1957 there has been a parade through downtown followed by an outdoor market named "Market Days". The first permanent settler in Logansport Township was Nicholas Carlock on November 3, 1814. He and his family were among the first to move into what would become Logansport Township. Carlock built a log cabin on the east bank of Wabash River near present-day Schererville. The township was organized on February 14, 1825 by James Ivey under the name "Carlock Township." In 1830, John Banning founded a trading post near present day Burlington in Crawford County and named it "Banning's Landing". In 1836, Simeon Kuntz donated land including what is now eastern part of Logansport Township to establish "Kuntz Park". This park became one of the most popular summer destinations for residents in Logansort
Logansport was founded in 1824 by John Logan and James Logan. The town was named for General George Washington, who had fought in the American Revolution. Logansport served as a wagon stop on the Wabash River before becoming a small coal mining town. In 1859, the town became an agricultural center due to its location near the then-new Indiana State Normal School. Logansport continued to grow during the 20th century, becoming one of the largest cities in Indiana with over 50,000 residents by 1930. The city's growth halted in the 1960s as a result of suburbanization and decline in manufacturing jobs. However, since 2000 local redevelopment has brought new life to Logansport and it is now an important commercial and cultural center in central Indiana.
