Logansport is an unincorporated community in Logans County, Indiana, United States. The population was 547 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Logansport and Decatur counties. The first settler in Logansport was George Hargrave, who arrived in 1814. In 1821, James Kapp purchased the land from Hargrave for $100. At that time it was a part of Decatur County. loganstown village was laid out by Elijah Slater in 1827 and named for John Cannelle LOGAN (1768-1835), one of the early settlers in this area In 1829, William Witherspoon registered a landing place on the White River with the name "Logansport." This location became known as Witherspoon Landing because General George Armstrong Washington's brigade landed here during his march from Fort Harrison to push Butler's army back across the river near present day Lafayette,Indiana on July 17th 1830. The town developed around this landing spot and began to take on its present name of Logansport after Captain John Logan (1798-1875), one of its earliest residents Captain John Logan served as postmaster at Logansport from 1840 to 1845 and also built a store there which still stands today In 1849, Major Elisha McMurtry organized a company of cavalry called "The Legion" under command of Colonel Israel Putnam to suppress wild Indian fanatics living along the White River nearpresent day Lafayette This event is considered to be significant in History because it marked the beginning of white settlement in this region
