The city was founded in 1847 and incorporated as a town in 1856. The first settler in Logansport was James Witherspoon, who arrived with his family from Maryland on November 21, 1847. He built a log cabin on the east side of the current downtown square. Logansport became a town on April 15, 1856 when it voted to become part of the larger Bloomington metropolitan area. In 1870, the Ohio Central Railroad reached Logansport and made it an important commercial center for southeastern Indiana. The railroad brought many new residents to Logansport and its growing industries such as carpentry, accounting and engineering. In 1824, George Stephenson built the first steam locomotive in America at nearby Fort Dearborn; it was used to transport coal from Ohio to Detroit. By 1830, logging had begun on what is now downtown Logansport and many other parcels were bought and sold during this time including much of what is currently known as First National Bank Park (now US-41). In 1837, Jno. DavenPORT took over management of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad from James Buchanan Durant which made Logan Port one of the most important transportation hubs in the Midwest for goods movement east and west before railroads became prevalent throughout most of America. At that time there were no streetcars or buses running through town so locals relied heavily on boats/steamboats to get around especially during winter when roads were closed due to snow drifts! During World War II Logansport played an important role as a munitions manufacturing center with plants making ammunition for both Nazi Germany and Japan alike as well as components for tanks and planes! Today remnants of these wartime factories can still be found all throughout downtown including inside First National Bank Park where you can view parts of a Japanese tank that once stood outside their plant! Logansport has been growing steadily since its incorporation into townhood in 1907 despite some natural disasters such as a devastating flood that destroyed much property along Cedar Rapids Road which bisected town limits back then! During this time growth continued with major shopping centers being constructed such as Kmart Plaza (later Sears) opening up next door while more residential areas started to poke their head up such as Higgins Road becoming home to several schools starting with Central High School followed by East Side Elementary School before eventually morphing into Douglas College District Technical School today!
