Logansport is a city in Logansport County, Indiana, United States. The population was 30,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Logansport County. The citys nickname is "The City of Progress." Logansport was founded in 1827 as an Indian trading post on the Wabash River. In 1835, the town was platted and named for James Ladd, a member of the first Indianapolis municipal council. In 1839, Ladd's son-in-law John Stephenson founded logging and shipping company that became known as Stephenson & Company. Stephenson's grandson Isaac Payne started a grocery store in 1840 and named it Payne’s Grocery after his uncle Elijah Payne who ran the post office from 1830 to 1840. In 1861, Logansport became one of ten counties organized within Whatcom County when that county was divided into two parts by territorial governor David Hunter Morris. By 1870, Logansport had become an integral part of Greencastle Township which merged with what is now Clearwater Township in 1871. By 1880, logging had ceased completely and only small farming operations remained inLoganstown while other towns developed around it including Lafayette (1881), Mount Vernon (1882), Spencer (1883), whose post office opened in 1889 and closed 1902; Albion (1885) served as its predecessor until 1907; Noblesville (1908) followed suit until its merger with nearby Georgetown; and finally South Bend in 1912 before becoming a full municipality within what is now Elkhart Township on July 1st 1914."

The city is located on the banks of the Little Wabash River and on the east side of the Wabash River National Forest. The first people to live in what is now Logansport were Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild plants and animals near present-day downtown. They named their community "Turtle Run" because they thought turtles would be safe from hunters if they lived there. In 1827, James Kapp established a ferry service across the Little Wabash River to connect Turtle Run with other settlements in central Indiana. This early transportation system helped develop Logansport as a commercial center and served as an important link between eastern Indiana and central Illinois. In 1836, John Gregg opened a small grocery store in downtown that became known as Gregg's Grocery & Inn. The store thrived for many years until it was destroyed by fire in 1894. After that fire, Gregg turned his attention to developing Logansport into a larger town by constructing new buildings and expanding his business operations into other businesses such as lumberyards, salt mines, cheese factories, hotels, schools (including one founded in 1892 which still operates), churches (including one founded in 1896) and additional residences. Logansport is a town in Logans County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,857 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Logansport. The first settler in what is now Logansport was John Ritchie in 1827. He and his family built a log cabin on the current site of the town on the banks of the Ottawa River. Logansport was platted in 1836 by James Bledsoe, who named it for General George Armstrong Custer, who had fought with him during the Indian Wars. In 1847, Minnesota Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens appointed John Haines as Surveyor-General for this territory; Haines recommended that Logansport be established as its capital. On March 1, 1847, Michael Kelly became its first Mayor/Citizen-at-Large and also donated land to build a courthouse and jail within the town limits. Logansport grew rapidly during its early years; by 1860 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1865, it became an incorporated village when all of Logans Township except one block (northwest corner) became part of $5 per capita taxes approved by voters throughout Butler Township which included much later developing parts of downtown Logansport including most notably First National Bank building now known as Courthouse Square located at 202 N Main Street between Second & Third Streets across from City Hall). On November 7th 1870 core members from many small communities around Butler Township met together at Ebeneezer Methodist Church to organize what would become called "Logansburg Consolidated Company" because they wanted their own society with their own governance type similar to other railroad companies out there - not just along Sidecar Road like so many were doing! This company eventually became GAF Steel Corporation after merging with other local steel firms including Bethlehem Steel Corp., Indianapolis Welding Company Inc., Maytag Sewage Works Inc., Northwestern Pipe Line Co., Moline Steelseries Ltd., etc.; but ultimately founder's dream would come true when LGC Minerals Corporation merged into GAF Steel Corp back in 1984! Today we still own our original gristmill from that time!
