On December 4th of that year, a store and mill were built at this location by Peter Elliot and David Cramer. Logansport is a city in Logansport County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Logansport County. The city has a total area of 362 square miles (971 km²). The first settler in what is now Logansport was Nicholas Ladd who came to the area in 1809. He erected a cabin on the bluffs overlooking the river which he named "Ladd's Landing". loganstown township was organized in 1821 and named for Nicholas Ladd. In 1825, John Stephenson started a sawmill and gristmill on the south side of the river about 12 miles east of town. This mill became known as Stephenson's Mill after John Stephenson's son-in-law, Elijah McCoy had built it there. In 1830, Elijah McCoy died leaving his estate to his brother James McCoy who founded logging company with some other men called The Western Union Company whichlogging began on December 1, 1830 near present day Monroeville. A large sawmilling operation took place here until 1865 when all but one tree were cut down by an Indian raiders led by Captain Samuel Winchester resulting in severe losses for American mills at this time. Logansport lost its status as a center of trade because transportation improved so greatly with railroad construction that many larger mills moved to cities such as Indianapolis and Dayton during this time period while small towns continued to decline throughout most of 20th century due mainly to lack of economic opportunity and population growth within chains like Walmart or KFC etc., which have largely replaced traditional industries hereabouts since then! Logansport did experience some growth during World War II as military production increased dramatically here; however manufacturing never regained its pre-war level until more recent times due primarily to downsizing by local businesses after automation eliminated thousands of jobs across Midwest industry over that period! Today Logansport is an interesting market town full of history with active businesses and plenty going on despite relatively low levels of economic development outside chain stores or online sales opportunities!!
