The first gun light was built by J.D. Heaney and Company of Logansport, Indiana and it consisted of a small battery powered lamp on a pole. It was used to signal shots fired during the 1892 open-air pistol match at Big Muddy River Park. The match was an annual event that featured some of the best shooters in America. In 1902, Gossamer Gun Lighters became the first company to produce gun lights with an exposed metal base which allowed them to be mounted on poles or posts for use at night. This modification made GUNLIGHTS much more visible to observers and helped make them more popular among hunters and recreational shooters alike. By 1912, many companies had produced guns lights and they were becoming more standard items among law enforcement officers and hunting enthusiasts alike.
