The name of the town comes from a Shawnee leader and Frenchtown resident named Pierre Lafitte. Lafitte's father-in-law, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, also called "Père Noël", founded the village of Saint John on what is now the northwest edge of Logansport in 1795. The first permanent settler in Logansport was Pierre Lafitte who arrived in 1795. In 1807, George Washington surveyed and laid out a township for those who would settle in that area under the name of "Frenchtown". The first post office was established in this township on July 1, 1807. In 1828,Indianola Township was organized with land given to it by James Kapp as part of his gift to the community which included Fort Dearborn and other territory east of present day Interstate 5. Indianola Township continued until it was merged into Logansport Township on February 6th, 1907. Logansport played an important role during both World Wars I and II due to its location near strategic points along I-5 and its access to munitions production plants across the country. During World War II, many fellow towns along I-5 were bombed or destroyed by Japan including Saint John which lost over 90% of its structure and all but two buildings within five days after being hit (). After World War II ended most manufacturing left Logansport but some new businesses have started up such as American Express and HasbroToyota(). Today much of downtown is filled with businesses like Macy's Department Store (closed since 2011), Ford Motor Company (opened in 1984), Bankers Life Fieldhouse (opened in 1913), Sears Holdings ( opened 1962) among others
Logansport was a small town in Indiana that was founded by John Logans in 1826. In 1880, the town had a population of around 100 people and it ceased to exist when it was merged with neighboring communities into the new city of Logansport.
