In the early 1800s, Logansport, Indiana was a small town with a small population. However, it played an important role in the ammunition industry. The city had two major Ammunition plants: one operated by the United States Army and the other by Colt Firearms. Both plants produced artillery rounds and projectiles used by artillery and riflemen in World War I and World War II. The Armory built in 1871 was one of the first large-scale gunsmithing enterprises in America. It manufactured rifles, shotguns, pistols, cannons, machine guns and grenades. The Armory also supplied ammunition to both Third World nations during the Cold War era as well as to domestic firearms manufacturers. Logansport's history goes back to 1853 when John Witherspoon purchased 640 acres near present-day Logansport on which he built a sawmill and gristmill. In 1868 he sold his mill site to Prentice & Porter for $225 cash plus lumber at $2/ Board foot (1/4 acre). On December 2nd of that year Prentice & Porter erected a frame building for their new store on what is now Main Street. They called it "The old Armoury". The store stayed open until 1907 when it burned down due to an arson attempt by local teenagers. A new store opened on enlarge lot adjacent where First National Bank Building stands today on November 14th 1906 . From 1911 until its closure in 1964 there was also an armoury annex located at 4th Avenue South between Clinton Street and Elmwood Avenue . Ammunition production continued at this location until 1942 when all operations were moved to Fort Harrison Arsenal Complex just outside of Indianapolis after WWII ended

In 1830-1831 Lafayette College students traveled through Logansport to observe Indian hostilities against American settlers on the Wabash River north of where it flows into Lake Michigan Some time after this trip class members met with local citizens to discuss formulating plans for college expansion into what would become Logansports limits Classes began for one semester in November 1830 and continued until March 1831 under Presidents Arthur Ashe and James Buchanan . At this point there were only three students aboard President Ashe's vessel when they set out from Fort Wayne for river navigation which they accomplished safely but with great effort and expenditure ..... By 1840 most all major early logging operations had been discontinued by then due to competition from lumber mills closer to Chicago .... A sawmill was built on Main Street in 1840 by Jabez Harmon which operated until 1861 By then over two thousand men were employed primarily in agriculture supported by about fifteen miles (24 km) of canal running through town .... From 1860-1865 four brick buildings housed various government departments including courts house barracks barracks jail , printing office building courthouse Annex ... these functions are continuing today as part of Municipal Services Department ...... several other businesses also flourished during that time including Jukes Brewery & Newsagency (later known as Bob's Pizza), Goodyear Tire & Rubber company and Post Office .... loggers gradually replaced hand drivers hauling logs downriver as transportation methods throughout Midwest ............. Prior to World War II much production took place across Big Three Rivers region behind dams where water power produced electricity grid connected cities................. After war many factories closed or moved away leaving towns virtually deserted .......... When post office moved its main office east some businesses closed such as Jukes Brewery while others converted into apartments ............... When Interstate 70 was completed bypassing town most residents vacated ................. In recent years many people have returned makingLoganskort an active community once again
