Lebanon, Indiana is a small town in Porter County, Indiana, located on the eastern side of the state. The population was 1,802 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1872 by George and Lucy Cook as a post office called Lebanon Station. In 1893, it changed its name to honor General James H. Lee who had fought against Mexico in the Mexican-American War and later served as an American general under Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. The Post Office closed in 1959 and current day Lebanon is based mostly on agricultural land that has been devoted to corn, soybeans, wheat, and other crops for many years now. Lebanon began to grow rapidly when Interstate 465 was built through Porter County in the early 1990s and transportation became much more convenient for residents there. In recent decades Lebanon has seen strong growth due to its proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Indianapolis and Chicago – two of which have become major tourist destinations due to their rich history and variety of attractions available within walking or driving distance of each other. In 1902, the community purchased land east of Lebanon on which they built a large farming village that still stands today. The village served as the centerpiece for social events and religious services in Lebanon until 1952 when it was destroyed by a fire. Since then, various attempts have been made to rebuild the village but all have come to nothing. Today, Lebanon remains a rural community with few residents over the age of sixty-five.
Lebanon, Indiana was founded in 1827 by the merger of two small villages: Lebanon and Caldwell. The town of Lebanon was named for areek, which is the Syriac word meaning "border" or "edge." In 1829, it became one of the original counties in Indiana. The first white settler in Lebanon arrived in 1836. Early residents were primarily farmers and traders who traded with nearby Ohio and Illinois. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army invaded Indiana from Kentucky and crossed the state line into northern Indiana. By 1862, Indianapolis had fallen to Confederate forces and the war ended there for Indiana. For many years after the war, Lebanon served as a garrison town along the border with Kentucky until it became an incorporated city in 1907. The present day Lebanese community began to form when Mexicans immigrated to southern Indiana in droves after World War II. Many Lebanese businesses developed throughout this time including restaurants, showers/bathhouses, churches and mosques - all while keeping their cultural traditions alive within their own communities across America
