Lebanon, Indiana is home to the oldest continuously operated scopes in the United States and one of the few remaining towns in America with a local museum dedicated to optics. The town was founded by Dutch settlers in 1824 and was originally named "Dundalk." In 1828, Dundalk became part of the newly formed state of Indiana and its first government was a volunteer militia. The first scopes were made in Lebanon,Indiana. A familyowned business, Wm. & Mary Morris Company, manufactured telescopes from 1829-1850. The company's products included microscopes (the Morris microscope), astronomical globes (for viewing planets and stars at different distances), sextants (for finding bearings on ships) and binoculars (used for Seeing). In 1850, a group of experienced Opticsians from Philadelphia came to Lebanon to teach optical techniques to new residents. They introduced an improved type of telescope known as the "Kanelandian reflector." This instrument allowed people in the town to view objects much farther away than they could before because it had a large mirror that curved inward towards the lens instead of outward like most early telescopes. Sheldon Kaneland became president of Wm. & Mary Morris Company in 1865 after his father's death and continued developing this technology until his death in 1902. He is considered founder of modern American optics and helped lead America into World War 1 with his inventions such as machine gunsights for artillery shells and air reconnaissance devices

Lebanon was founded in 1814 by Captain John Waring and his wife Deborah. In 1828, Captain Waring's son-in-law James Haughton bought land near Lebanon for $5 per acre. This location became known as "Hendrickshire." In 1846, General David Hunter decided to move the capital of Indiana from Council Bluffs to Indianapolis so that he could take advantage of its more central location and improved transportation infrastructure. Congress passed a bill on March 3,1846 giving Indiana the right to establish a capital city. On April 14,1846 (the day before Fort Wayne was established), General Hunter moved the capitol from Council Bluffs to Indianapolis and named it after himself - Davidson County seat of government for Indiana (later Lebanon). The first buildings in what is now Lebanon were built in 1847 on land donated by James Haughton. The town grew rapidly during this time with new homes being built all around the area until enough space was available on Monument Hill for a courthouse and jail in 1851. A post office was started in 1850 and by 1860 there were over 100 residents living in Lebanon. The village located south of town begangrowing slowly until it reached its current size about 1900 when roads were completed connecting it to other parts of the community
