The town is named after the ancient Lebanon, a region in present-day Syria that was then part of the Ottoman Empire. Lebanon, which has a population of 5,500 people as of 2016, is one of three townships in Clay County and one of five townships in Washington Township. It lies along the Ohio River just east of Center Point and west of Mount Vernon. The area now occupied by Lebanon was first settled by Quakers in 1786. In 1800, John Taylor founded Greenville on the west bank of the river opposite Lebanon and established it as an agricultural community for his own colony; but this settlement failed to take hold until after he had moved away from Greenville to become its first governor when Indiana became a state in 1824. By 1830, however, both Greenville and Lebanon had disappeared from mapmakers' eyes because they were too small for inclusion within new counties created from parts of West Virginia Territory during the Kansas–Nebraska Act (1865). The history of Lebanese began with French traders who began working at Fort Dearborn around 1795; trade with America resumed following France's withdrawal from North America in 1804. In 1825 Lafayette visited eastern United States and observed that "the wealth exhibited by our friends at this junction [in Clay County] would have made any other country very prosperous." He recommended thatIndiana should create two new counties: Claysburg on the east side of the Ohio River and Mt Vernon on its west side to accommodate more commerce between Indiana and Kentucky while also accommodating larger areas lying beyond Porter’s Ferry territory - land which later became known as “Indianapolis” – making what would be known as Lebanese not only an Indianapolis suburb but also one comprising much older neighborhoods such as Old Town Lafayette dating back to pre-Revolutionary days when most residents resided near either Fort Dearborn or Mount Vernon on or near river banks where trading took place daily with Native Americans In 1850 Congress authorized creation of four additional counties: Star City (later Terre Haute), Evansville (which included portions now inside Evanston), Waterloo (now Watertown) and Clinton (later Clinton Township). But since there were already too many bodies politic operating outside county lines – especially within newly organized Clay County – no action was taken until 1861 when it was proposed to mergeClaysburg/Mt Vernon intoClinton/Clinton Township due to their proximity together on I-465 traffic patterns without corresponding development taking place despite promises by legislators at various points throughout their tenure While initially supportive local merchant farmers quickly realized they could make even more money off farm products shipped downriver than through land exports if they developed infrastructure necessary for trucking goods across state lines thereby allowing them access both physically and commercially to markets across North America these developments never happened primarily because landowners resisted pressure from merchants wanting benefits including tax breaks which would have given them control over transportation infrastructure primarily used by menial laborers engaged only incidentally in agriculture while those same men enjoyed high levels government service including posts as judges lieutenant governors etc leading some historians[who are subscribed]to believe [that] while legislators may have wanted business opportunities open up for farmers they did not really care about rural living conditions[/emphasis added]. As late as 1978 Congressman Tom Latham commented "I didn't want any partook"of calls for merger knowing full well how powerful those interests were although he ultimately voted against it . Although most citizens today claim no knowledge whatsoever about prior legislation or events leading up to its passage we can still learn quite a bit about what transpired during those historic years through oral histories preserved through members organizations like Friends Historical Society
