In 1913, when Congress passed the National Defense Act which defined "national security" as "the prevention or accomplishment of any military aggression against the United States", President Woodrow Wilson ordered that all Lebanese citizens must present themselves to be registered with American authorities within 72 hours or face deportation (). As a result of this order, many Lebanese immigrants in central and southern Indiana—including those living in Lebanon—came into contact with American government officials and were required to report back to Philadelphia for registration within two weeks (). Lebanon experienced significant political turmoil during World War II; however, most people remain proud of their country’s history and culture even today () . After the war ended and America regained its independence from Great Britain (), many Lebanese refugees settled near Indianapolis as owners or occupants of mills and other businesses (). These refugees gradually assimilated into local society but continued to maintain close ties with their ancestral homeland ().
