Lebanon, Indiana is a small city in the northwest corner of Indiana. It is bordered by French Fort to the west, Elkhart County to the east, and more recently, Hendricks County to the north. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Lebanon is named after Saint Basil of Caesarea which was born in Persia in c. 335 A.D., making it one of only a few places in America with this name. Lebanon has a long history dating back to 1824 when United States citizens James Hays and John Fenton settled on land near what is now Lebanese Avenue and White River Road. The town first received its current name from Saint Basil of Caesarea who founded it on December 8th of that year while he was travelling through Indiana Territory on his way to preach at Hobbsville (now part of Terre Haute). As Lebanon grew and prospered, so did its reputation as an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and good water resources. Today, Lebanese businesses include several banks, several grocery stores/grocery chains as well as various manufacturing sectors including textiles and plastics. Lebanon, Indiana was founded in 1816 by Reuben and Esther Askew. The town of Lebanon was named after the biblical city of Beirut, which is located in present-day Syria. The Askews were immigrants from Prussia who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620. Lebanon has been a part of the United States since 1796. The first settler in Lebanon, Isaac Dowling, died in 1814 while trying to found a new settlement near what is now Indianapolis. Three years later, John Stephenson moved his family to Lebanon from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania and built the first frame house there. In 1830, Presbyterian minister George White purchased land east of Lebanon for an agricultural demonstration farm that he called “White” Farm because it had no white people living on it at that time. White also donated land for schools and churches in the community. In 1834, Lewis Denny erected a log cabin on what is now Old State Road 20th Street for himself and his wife Sarah (Denny). In 1840, David Jordon bought three acres of property east of Lebanon from Ebenezer Higgins for $325 dollars. He began growing crops there and named his farm “Jeronimo” after Mexican sergeant Francisco Xavier de la Peña who fought against American forces during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). When De la Peña returned to Mexico City following the war's end, he discovered that some of his belongings had been sold by Ulysses S. Grant to Purchaser Henry Dearborn as part of his large purchase at auction comprising all confiscated properties along the Texas border during the Compromise OF 1850 (the Agreed Settlement). For this reason - La Hoya claims - Jeronimo became one of Dearborn's favorite possessions when he took over control of Indian Territory following its cession to America following the Civil War (1861). Jordon cattle were used early on in central Indiana as feeders for hayrides throughout much of north-central Indiana but soon disappeared as more efficient horse or wagon transportation became available through railroads reaching southward into Missouri and Illinois beginning about 1900 CE In 1951 Jordon's heirs sold their interest in Jeronimo Estate Farms Inc., producing hay only until 1957 when they leased it back to Paul Weisbrodt who continued production until 1978 CE From then until 2007 production was done by two families; one with 54 cows/heifers operation using GMO corn dust fed systems & another with 50 hogs operation using natural manure products dosed with Bt toxin & other antibiotics
