Lebanon, Indiana is a small town in the Eastern Panhandle of Indiana. It is located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and it is part of the city of Lafayette. The population was 5,545 at the 2010 census. The name comes from two Lebanon Valley settlements: Lebanon Township and Lebanon Hill. Lebanon Township was organized in 1827, while Lebanon Hill was organized in 1830 by George Armstrong Crouse. Both villages were named for General David Lloyd who fought against Napoleonic France during the American Revolution. Delaware County was created in 1836, when Lafayette was split off from Crawford County. In 1871, Lafayette's first post office opened and continued to serve until it closed in 1907 because of mail service difficulties between that town and Chicago. In 1865, a train station called "Lafayette" was built on present-day Mulberry Street near where the current Post Office building stands today; however this location did not become an official post office until 1902. A steam locomotive named "Alma" ran over a switch at this station on October 3, 1911 which caused severe damage to both tracks as well as a large hole in the side of the locomotive which required repair for several weeks; this event became known as "The Switching Incident". The current Post Office building (later named after Mrs. John A.] Murchison) opened its doors on May 1, 1912; it replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed by fire on December 17, 1909. At that time there were only three postal employees serving Lebanon township- one clerk and two mail carriers- all of whom were appointed by local residents through election process rather than through appointment by Congress or President Taft with respect to their duties as postal officers within their respective townships/counties/sections... On November 8th 1944 elements of United States Army's Third Infantry Division attacked petroleum storage tanks belonging to V-2 rocket factory at Beirut Airfield northwest of Beirut village... In doing so they destroyed about thirty miles² worth (50 km²)of forested land including four big trees measured 100 feet tall... All told some five hundred acres (200 hectares) lies completely ruined today due to what can only be described as indiscriminate artillery shelling throughout Fallujah area during Liberation Campaign... Lebanon is a small, agricultural community in northwestern Indiana. It was founded by Methodist missionaries in the 1830s. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, reaching its peak in the 1920s. By World War II, Lebanon had shrunk to a single-story farming hamlet. However, since then, its economy has shifted considerably to tourism and business services. The population of Lebanon today is approximately 790 residents. Lebanon began as an agricultural village on the banks of the Wabash River. In 1830, Methodist missionaries arrived in what is now Lebanon to help start a new religious congregation there. They named their new settlement after Mount Carmel (in Palestine), where they had been baptized some years earlier. Reverend John Ligon first preached at Lebanon Congregational Church on October 9, 1830. By 1835, the church had built a modest chapel and Baptist pastor James White moved into the village from Paulding County near Fort Wayne to lead worship there. The growth of Lebanon was rapid during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to two factors: large numbers of immigrants from southern United States seeking better opportunities in northern Indiana; and increased trade between Lafayette and Indianapolis through railroads connected both cities with booming populations centers such as Chicago and Cincinnati. In 1912, when Lewis Armitage became president of Purdue University (later Purdue University– Kokomo), he authorized construction of a new campus east of Lafayette along Hwy 21A—the first time that Purdue had ever located outside of Indianapolis proper. With this expansion came increased competition for land within Lebanon—a situation that would only worsen over time as other nearby municipalities annexed or absorbed rural villages like Lebanon into their own jurisdictions.. However, despite these challenges, Lebanese settlers continued to grow rapidly throughout much of the 20th century until they reached their peak around 1930 when census figures show them numbering 3200 people living in 540 homes (). Nonetheless,, by World War II Beirut’s population had shrunk marginally to just under 700 residents () due largely to_________________________________________________________________________ (see below). However following America’s entry into World War II ,life changed drastically for Lebanese citizens who suddenly found themselves caught up in one massive campaign against Axis forces led by Nazi Germany . After more than three years (), consisting primarily of bombings raids which killed scores indiscriminately including women and children (), Beirut’s limited resources finally allowed for reconstruction efforts starting immediately thereafter with begins earnest planning commencing well before Pearl Harbor ..... The building served as the starting point for many later legal proceedings and has been designated as a historical landmark by both the Indiana Historical Society and the United States government.
