Lebanon, Indiana is a town in Knox County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department is one of the largest volunteer fire departments in the state. Lebanon was platted on March 1, 1827 by George Washington Lewis who named it for his grandson Lafayette (1789-1834). He was general during the American Revolution and served as commander-in-chief of the troops that fought in North America from 1775 to 1783. At age 20 he founded what would become Lebanon College which became one of the leading universities in America and remains so today. In 1857, James Moseley purchased 640 acres (251 hectares) southeast of Lebanon and began to erect a log cabin and farmhouse called "Moses House". This structure still stands and is used as a museum today. In 1879 Moseley donated another parcel of land to be developed into an agricultural college campus with this name; now known as Purdue University. "Moses House" served as home to Purdue's first president Edward Clements until his death in 1927 and continued to serve as office space for various university staff until its retirement in 1973. Today "Moses House" houses offices for Purdue Extension Service which provides programming for citizens throughout southern Indiana Pennsylvania Dutch family descendants also lived near Lebanon before migrating West during World War II when many farms were destroyed due to aerial bombing raids over Japan

After a series of skirmishes which resulted in more than 60 Shawnee dead and many horses, clothing, cattle and property taken by the British troops retreating back to Canada (known then as Upper Canada), General Anthony Wayne reached this area on February 17th 1825 after marching through what is now West Virginia with 975 men against 3 Indian villages numbering about 1500 warriors/canoes led by Chief Tecumseh which he destroyed at The Battle of Horseshoe Bend nearpresent day Portsmouth Junction where Wayne lost his life along with five others including Major John Doniphan who later became Ulysses S Grant’s second Secretary of War
Lebanon was a small, rural community in northwestern Indiana until the early 1800s. The town's history dates back to 1810 when it was established as a regular post office by postal officials from Muncie, Indiana. In 1814, the first school in Lebanon was founded and grades one through four were taught by parents or local teachers. In 1824, Lebanon became part of the newly formed United States of America and experienced some growth during its early years. However, the Panic of 1837 caused many businesses to close and began a period of decline for Lebanon. By 1840, only five families remained in Lebanon and the population had fallen to just over 100 people. However, during the late 1830s and 1840s there were significant growth opportunities for Lebanon due to increasing trade with Canada and Mexico. With new transportation options available after Indian Removal in 1847, Lebanese entrepreneurs developed new industries such as lumbering and milling. By 1865, Beirut had become an important commercial center with several thousand residents. Unfortunately, economic troubles followed during the Reconstruction Era which led to increased violence in the community. Nevertheless,despite these challenges Lebanese residents continue to thrive throughout most of its history
