Notable crops include corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton, potatoes and apples. Manufacturing also played a significant role during this time with firms such as JBL Audio Company (1952), Fisher-Price (1956), Motorola (1976) and Maytag (1986) being established in downtown Lafayette. The oilfield boom of the early 1990s led to increased demand for local jobs throughout much of southwestern Indiana but especially in Lafayette where many oilfield workers relocated after becoming disillusioned with life away from production sites across Texas or Oklahoma City." After several years of decline following 9/11 attacks which brought World Trade Center construction workers into town for temporary work during November 2001 - January 2002,[2] significant revitalization occurred throughout downtown Lafayette beginning around 2003 when Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced plans for a new stadium/parking garage complex called "The Yard" which would accommodate up to 10 million people over 25 years with 5 million square feet (~200 acres)[3]). This project ultimately failed due largely because investment dried up during the Great Recession while other major projects were completed or announced in surrounding cities without similar financial setbacks."
