Lebanon, Indiana, is a small town located in Putnam County, Indiana. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The town was platted on November 5, 1857, by five settlers from Lebanon who had come to Indiana as pioneers. The name Lebanon comes from Mount Carmel in Galilee and refers to an unspecified hill or mountain in that area. The first post office was established in Lebanon on December 1, 1858. Lebanon is one of several towns founded by Methodist missionaries during the early 19th century who were looking for new surroundings after their failed efforts to establish churches in Illinois and Kentucky. In 1854–55 these missionaries built a log cabin near Lebanon which served as their headquarters until they moved to Washington Township on January 4, 1856. In 1860 Presbyterian missionaries arrived from Scotland and began building a church at what is now Main Street (the present day corner of West Market and North Temple Streets). On July 14 of that year the cornerstone for the church was laid with much fanfare by local dignitaries including Mayor Abel Beasley and Postmaster John Fenton. By 1865 there were six churches operating in Lafayette County: three Presbyterian (with worship facilities at Broad Ripple Road and Highland Avenue), one Methodist (founded by Captain James McMillin with worship services at his farmhouse off State Route 6), one Baptist (founded by Auld Lang Syne McDonald), one Congregationalist (founded by Revs Daniel Cornell and Charles Hensley) – all with Bible classes conducted Mondays mornings before services started outside; two schools also operated: One public school serving grades 7 through 12 where students attended morning sessions while another private school taught grade 11 through 16 which used materials furnished by the board of education; and two academies teaching high school level courses: One Friends School opened on September 8th 1861 offering classes from K-12inderstns; it closed upon its merger into neighboring Indianapolis’ Dearborn Academy on February 11th 1897; while the other Friends School opened on October 9th 1861 offerng Grades 7-12 Classes only At its peak enrollment around 240 pupils attendd each session but due to lack of space within concurrent schools organizational disbandments followed soon thereafter In 1865 when Lafayette Parish merged into Jennings County both High Schools closed along with most other educational institutions leaving only our two Academies still open today
