Lawrence, Indiana is a small town in the southern part of the state of Indiana. The population was 8,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lawrence County seat. The name "Lawrence" comes from a place called "Hendricksonstown" which was located on the banks of the river Licking between 1809 and 1814. Some early settlers in this area were David Hendrickson and his family, who settled around 1790 near what is now Lawrenceville; John Richardson built a log cabin about 1800 near present-day Uniontown; and George Stephenson built an Iron Bridge over the Licking in 1811. It was not until 1827 that Lawrence received its official name - it became known as "Lawrenceburg". In 1868, local entrepreneur James Henson donated land to build a railway station which would become one of Lawrence's main attractions. The first train arrived here on May 5th, 1870; and by 1850, Lawrence had become one of the most important centres in southwestern Indiana with its own newspaper (the "Lincoln Journal"), courthouse (1853), post office (1857), schoolhouse (1860), hotel (1864), Masonic Lodge No 1 (1875) and several other businesses. By 1900, there were also two newspapers published locally: the "Lincoln Journal" and the "Marshall County Times". In 1911, when Wallace Wade was elected president of America, he selected Lawrence as one of his 'Ten Cities for Progress'. This designation helped to stimulate economic development in Lawrence through investment by private individuals and organizations such as Weyerhaeuser Company Limited., Ford Motor Company Ltd., Bethlehem Steel Corporation., Wabash Electric Railway Company Limited., General Electric Company et al.; among others. Many new jobs were created during this time period including many factory jobs which continued into World War II when production switched from munitions factories to aircraft manufacturing plants! Today, Lawrence anchors a busy little town with few if any negative aspects - despite being known for its large number of breweries - restaurants etc... lawrences biggest attraction is still its bustling Main Street atmosphere!

The town’s namesake comes from nearby Lawrence Mountain, which first became visible in 1785 when artillery ballistas were fired at it from nearby Fort Dearborn. The mountain continued to be an important landmark throughout much of Lawrence’s history because it offered residents easy access to gunpowder supplies needed to build cannons during the War of 1812 and later during the American Civil War. Lawrence also features some of America’s earliest commercial buildings dating back to at least 1857. These include the original court house which served as the local courthouse until 1861 when a newer building was constructed. As well, many other notable businesses have been established in Lawrence over the years including a grocery store (1910), post office (1863), restaurant (1963), library (1985), and several schools (1974-present). Today, Lawrence remains an important community with strong ties to its history and culture. Its citizens are active members of several organizations including the American Legion Auxiliary and Kiwanis Club., as well as numerous local churches such as First Baptist Church and Methodist church. As well, they enjoy occasional events such as Shakespeare plays or concerts at local venues.
Lawrence was one of the original settlements in the area now known as Indiana. The first settler, Isaac Lawrence, arrived in 1814. The town was named for him.
