Lawrence, Indiana is a small town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Lawrence is part of the Terre Haute–Kokomo Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Lawrence was a group of Frenchmen in 1674. A post office called "Lawrence" was established in 1834, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The community began as an agricultural settlement and experienced rapid growth during the early 19th century due to its strategic location on the Ohio River between Cincinnati and Indianapolis. In 1814, a canal was completed which connected Lawrence with Cincinnati and made it easier for goods to be transported through the region. This development led to increased business opportunities for the townspeople and helped contribute to its economic success through the years. During World War II, Lawrence became one of several U.S.-occupied towns along the Western Front; it served as Headquarters for Ninth Army from December 1944 until May 1945 at Fort Myer (later Arlington National Cemetery). On January 17, 1945, Japanese forces surrendered at Iwo Jima after suffering heavy losses during their three-month campaign there; this event marked Japan's surrender fully within our borders Lawrence's economy has changed significantly over time; however, most of its industries have been based around agriculture or natural resources such as coal and oil. Today, Lawrence is home to a number of small businesses as well as two schools - one public elementary school and one high school - that serve students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
