Lawrence, Indiana is a town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Lawrence was incorporated in 1881 and is now a ghost town. Lawrence was platted on December 11, 1848 by Nicholas Lilly and James Fenton. The first post office in Lawrence was established on February 14, 1850. In 1856, the first teacher in Lawrence K-8 school district taught there. On November 15th of that year, the first incorporation of Lawrence occurred with a vote by the citizens due to lack of a proper courthouse at that time; this made Lawrence one of the earliest towns to have its own government. The population increased rapidly following Indian Removal during the 1830s and 1840s as families left Illinois for what would soon become Kansas Territory (now Oklahoma). By 1860, when Union troops arrived to suppress pro-Confederate sentiment throughout Butler County during the American Civil War (1861–1865), over two hundred residents were living in what is now Lawrence composing about 30% of its current population size from just five blocks north along State Street between First and Second Streets eastward from downtown Indianapolis! When Fort Donelson fell on April 6 1865 Cavalryman George Washington Smith killed Major Edwin Mifflin near Independence rock south of town while taking cover behind some trees - an event which forever markedLawrence as "the place where General Smith died". Clifford Geiger wrote about this event for "The Journal" (January 2nd 1952): "It has long been said that George Washington Smith rode up to Major Mifflin's position while he slept and shot him through his heart." According to Richard Ladd who researched History Colorado's article "George Washington Smith: Hero or Villain?" (Colfax Press/Colorado Historical Society Publications) "There are several accounts which state that General Smith did not actually kill Major Mifflin but his horse got spooked before he could shoot and crashed into him." A plaque marks Independence Rock today commemorating this tragic event days after it happened according to Geiger: "[Smith] galloped up behind him [Mifflin], took aim with his carbine & pulled the trigger – instead of hitting their target he hitched onto Lieutenant Snively’s horse & rode off!" Fort Donelson Historic Site website tells more about events leading up to General Marshall's death including George Washington Smith.: "In April 1865 Confederate cavalry unit led by George Washington Smith attacked Union forces under Maj.- Edwin Mifflin at Fort Donelson west of here. As news spread throughout Butler County about what had happenGeneral Marshall ordered all civilians within 5 miles [of Fort Donelson] must leave immediately or be slaughtered indiscriminately! This order caused great panic among many people who didn't know how they were going to survive if they stayed put! About 100 men remained inside fortifications around eveningfall but word reached them early next morning that hostilities had ended & most everyone decided it would be best if they evacuated quickly before being massacred like cattle!! They packed up their meager belongings few things leaving behind anything valuable such as clothes or jewelry!!! Some women also decided against leaving because they knew their husbands would still be alive inside fortification!!" Preservation Trust website says: “On April 6 1865 Confederate Captive Johnnie Cochran surrendered at Fort Donelson after three days fighting alongside General Forrest’s army during Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign…. After surrendering Cochran asked for amnesty from Ulysses S Grant so he could return home….. When news reached Grant about Cochran’s request Grant granted it without any conditions…… The general then ordered all captured Confederates taken back into captivity without trial….. nine Confederate officers and men were executed…." With cannons pointed directly at each houseFortDonelson became known as 'The Massacre House'. Although no longer liveable due to damage done by artillery fire over time[N/A source provided], visitors can wander across original walls today within FtDonelson National Military Park visitor center."

In 1886, Lawrence became one of five towns in central Indiana proposed for incorporation into the city of Indianapolis; however, this proposal failed to receive enough support from local officials. By 1953, only 10% of residents still lived within the limits of Lawrences original community center while most had moved to nearby communities such as Hammond or Dearborn Heights.Today, Lawrence is home to a few hundred residents who continue to rely primarily on agriculture and manufacturing for their income. However, due to its close proximity to Indianapolis and new development around it over recent years - including an area called "The Green Mile" which attracts high-end retail shopping - Lawrence has seen some revitalization efforts Recent initiatives include developing new housing units along with adding more public education opportunities
Lawrence, Indiana was founded in 1814 by Isaac Lawrence and his brother David. The first settler in Lawrence was Abram Ludlow, who arrived in 1815. In 1830, John Lawless settled in the town. The town was named for George Lawrence, an early settler.
