Lawrence, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Lawrence County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Lawrence County after Terre Haute and Westville. The area that would become Lawrence was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne's army invaded what is now Lawrence County and burned down four Indian villages before retreating back to Fort Dearborn. The townspeople accepted her name change and adopted it as their own unofficial motto: "Erected by Mrs. George Washington." In 1840–41, pioneer Alexander Sell served as an acting justice of the Peace for Irwin County while he served as state treasurer under future Ulysses S.
