Lawrence, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana and the seat of court for Township No. 1. The population was 5,623 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette metropolitan area. Lawrence was founded by Isaac Law in 1827 as a trading post on the Ohio River between Fort Wayne and Terre Haute. The post office was established in 1829 and named after Lawrence's older brother, James Law, who had been killed in an Indian attack near Fort Wayne twelve years earlier. In 1857, his father-in-law, Elijah Porterfield donated land to create what became Lawrence Township No. 1; it included all of present-day Lawrence County and much of eastern Dearborn County. The first settler in what is now Lawrence was John Kinney who built a cabin on the east side of the river in 1830. By 1830, there were about twenty homes and businesses functioning along the Ohio River waterfront alone; by 1840 that number had grown to seventy homes and businesses including two gristmills operated by Hays & White flouring mills (the only two such facilities west of Illinois). Until its annexation by Terre Haute in 1907, Lawrence served as both village (chartered under 42nd General Assembly) and county seat for Dearborn County which bordered it to the north on Indianapolis Bay (now Watertown), to the south on Lake Michigan (now called Porter Lake), and to the west on Lucasville proper. In 1907 when Terre Haute seceded from Indiana and formed its own state, Lawrence reverted back to Dearborn County as its seat but continued serving as village until 1959 when it became an incorporated town with full city status under then-Mayor David Wojtasiewicz*. In 1981 Mayor Wojtasiewicz gave up his mayoral offices – effective July 1 that year – to make way for newly elected school superintendent Drury Stevenson* who took office August 1st following a campaign promise from then-Governor Dan Quayle†.* On November 3rd 1980 while campaigning for sheriff against incumbent Sylvester Turner*, Quayle won handily with over 60% of precincts reporting*.* That same year saw another major change with Adolphus Busch moving his brewery out of Indy into unincorporated portions of Terre Haute so he could focus more attention on NASCAR racing operations across America’s third largest port*.* *Mayor David Wojtasiewicz resigned effective July 1st 1981 due to health reasons after leading law enforcement services while mayor * *Drury Stevenson assuming mayoral duties August1 1980

Lawrence, Indiana is a small town located in the St. Joseph County district of Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 514 at the 2010 census. Lawrence was founded in 1847 by James A. Lawrence and his wife Nancy Bledsoe Lawrence. It was named after General John A. Logan who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Illinois. The Lawrence family moved to this area in 1853 and started a grocery store that became one of the largest in the area. In 1889, they built a gristmill which still operates today. They also are responsible for building many homes here including two that are currently on display at the Indiana State Museum: One is called "The Gilded Cage" and features 24 intricately carved mirroragons with gold leaf and enamel; it cost $100,000 to build, and the other is called "The Lady fromLawrence." The town has had several businesses loyal to it over time including JBL Audio (now known as Acoustic Sounds), Keystone Loan & Insurance Company, Mid-America Glass Works (now known as Keystone Glass), Dickinson's Drug Store No 1 (now known as Dickenson's Pharmacy), Pfeiffer Dodge City Outfitters (later part of Pfeiffer Motorsports) until its acquisition by GMC in 2009, then GMC Academy until its closure in 2013 before being reborn as Big Red Truck Sales LLC since 2017 The first post office opened here on October 12th of 1851 under name "Wellsville". It closed down due to financial problems on December 3rd of that year by order of President James Kinsley because Wellsville did not have an adequate postal service like neighboring towns such as Terre Haute or Lafayette which were already established with Post Offices! On January 6th 1861 postmaster George Clements reopened "Wellsville" under new name: "Lafayette". Unfortunately due to outside factors such as Indian Wars/Fertile Soil Lovers' War/Unorganized Confederate Raids etc., Lafayette closed once again on May 10th 1865 due to lack of customers! However local residents kept it open through various door-to-door sales techniques until finally closing three days later on May 14th when all mail stopped coming into town because Union troops had burned down their arsenal across the river! This event made Lafayette immortalized for all time! From this point forward Lafayette would be referred to simply as "Lawrence"! On September 15th 1890 James A. Lawrence died suddenly from a heart attack while out golfing with his son John A./Johnnie Gail Lawrenceski who then took over operations from his father both at home and at business affairs going forward On October 12th 1951 local resident Vernon Fenton born Vernon Durant decided he wanted some property nearby so he bought 2 acres for $8000 making him one of the first citizens ever involved with what would becomeLawrence! Vernon continued farming additional land nearby until 1969 when he sold all except 20 acres directly adjacent to current city limits eastward towards Ligonier just west of I-465!!! This final sale allowed development within city limits without affecting rural areas which continue today!! To date there remains only 10 acres remaining unsold adjacent to city limits
Lawrence was founded in 1814 by Captain John Lawrence, who named it in honor of General John H. Lawrence, the hero of the Battle of Buena Vista. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1832, Lawrence became the county seat and remained so until 1906. The post office was established in 1832 and continued to serve until 1907. In 1887, a sawmill was built on the river near the present-day town square and began to produce lumber for local homes and businesses. The mill closed in 1951 but left an important legacy on Lawrence; it is still one of the most well-known landmarks in town today.
