Lawrence, Indiana is a small town in the southern part of the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lawrence is one of four townships in Lafayette County and one of two townships in Butler County. It lies on the North Branch of the White River, about 15 miles west-southwest of Indianapolis and 10 miles east-northeast of Terre Haute. The first settler in what would become Lawrence was James Manton who moved to this area from Danville, Illinois in 1824. He established a log cabin on what is now State Road 22 near present-day Lawrencetown in 1827. A post office called "Manton" was established here on October 5, 1827, by Jeptha Gentry with a population of three settlers. The first store built here was operated by David Potter and Abraham Taylor before it became known as "Lawrence". In 1830 Lorenzo Hinton opened a mercantile business at this location which continued until 1840 when it merged with that of Hinton and others under the name "Hinton's Merchant Tailor Store". On May 3, 1836 Nathaniel Pemberton erected a log cabin near present-day Brownstown for his wife Polly; she gave birth to their only child there on July 12th! The first school building constructed in Lawrence was an octagon grained frame structure erected by Pemberton on December 25thus becoming one of America's earliest schools! In 1841 John Davenport arrived from Genoa Township (now Westfield), Ohio and started trading goods with farmers along the White River between Terre Haute and Indianapolis; he soon created another successful trade route running southwesterly from Indiana through Lawrence to Brownsburg, Kentucky! Davenport had married into an influential family here; his eldest son George Washington Davenport later served as governor (1929-31) and mayor (1932-34)of Indianapolis! One can see evidence that early settlers used local coal mines located northwest of town while also using nearby salt mines to produce potash for their needs! By 1850 nearly every house had been built including some structures dating back to 1796 when Governor Thomas Jeffers destroyed most or all buildings along Fort Harrison Avenue due to overpopulation caused by rapid growth following American independence!! This forced many residents out onto Virginia Street where many homes were demolished during construction projects associated with development patterns across American cities during this time period! From these humble beginnings much later Lawrence would achieve renown as one of America’s “ Model Towns” thanks largely to its downtown business districts – home to such national icons as KFC & McDonalds – its fine architecture including both brick buildings dating back to 1860/61 (!), numerous parks complete with tennis courts & batting cages etc., its successful agricultural program led by Edwin Myerson which has produced thousands more jobs than any other community throughout its history (& still going strong today!), plus countless contributions made year after year by citizens like you As mentioned earlier, settlement began around 1800 when James Manton landed hereabouts following his journey upriver from Danville Illinois originally looking for land downriver but finding no takers so decided instead try settling further upriver arriving just prior thereto named "Manton". Other pioneer families include: David Potter (1830), Abraham Taylor (1833), Lorenzo Hinton (1840), Nathaniel Pemberton (1836). All dwellings were simple logs cabins or shacks until 1840 when they became larger + sturdy plank buildings typified via Nathanial Pemberton's erection thereof noted supra++ . That same year Sawyer Bledsoe came overland from New York via Cincinnati Virgina disembarking at Blue Island creek thence going due East Fork OKIA then eventually landing finally opposite Vine street bearing that name hereinabout... Some of the earliest examples of gun locks can be found dating back to the 6th century BC. Two ancient Egyptian tombs were discovered with sets of lockers that held a variety of objects, such as clothing and weapons. In 1793, James Cook discovered an inscription on a pair of Ancient Greek sarcophagi that mentioned the use of gunlocks to secure firearms in tomb robberies. This discovery led to the development of modern shotgun key systems, which allowed owners unrestricted access to their shotguns while they were locked up. Gun locks soon became popular throughout Europe and America. By 1868, most American states had adopted some form of firearm lock system. In Australia, however, the first recorded usage oflockers withguns was in 1894 when two policemen used them to store weapons during a robbery attempt at a station wagon belonging to John Forrest . The popularity and security benefits ofgun locks continue to this day – Lockers are now commonplace on many high-security firearm stores across the world.
The first gun locks were patented in 1849 by John Fenton. The lock was a simple revolving bar with a small keyhole that allowed the owner to secure their firearm.
Lawrence was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1817. The post office was first established in this town in 1827. Lawrence was named for General David Lawrence, an American Revolutionary War general and a member of the Indiana Constitutional Convention of 1792. The population of Lawrence peaked at over 10,000 in the early 1800s but has since declined to around 5,000 today. The town is located on the banks of the White River and is home to many large businesses including Sheridan Paper Manufacturers, Phelps Dodge Corporation, and Cummins Engine Company. The town also hosted the annual Indiana Automobile Show from 1951-1957 and also played host to the President's Cup golf tournament in 1978.
Lawrence, Indiana was founded in 1824 by pioneer George P. Lawrence and his wife Nancy. The town was named for General David Wilkinson who fought in the American Revolution. The first post office was established in 1827, and the first school was opened in 1830. Lawrence grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its strategic location as a transportation hub on the Indianapolis-Cincinnati Railroad and its position as a major manufacturing center for textiles, shoes, food products, and other items. In 1907, Lawrence became an independent city.
