Lawrence is a city in central Indiana, United States. It is the seat of Lawrence Township and the only municipality in Johnson County. The population was 14,923 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Lawrence was Nicholas Trimble, who arrived in 1814. Lawrence became a town on November 3, 1829, when it was selected as the site of an Indian treaty conference held by President James K. Polk. The city's name comes from General David fledging in early 1790 while Lt.-General Anthony Wayne was fighting with British forces near what would become Lawrenceburg; his horse got lost and he wandered into Indian Territory where he met General David Johnston and agreed to surrender rather than be captured alive. In 1836, Representative Lorenzo Bogan of Lawrence introduced a bill to make Lawrence the county seat of Johnson County after its predecessor, Terre Haute (then part of Evansville), declined to do so because it felt that Evansville had more people and resources. On May 1st of that year, voters approved the measure by a majority vote and on July 1st took effect; Johnson County was formed from parts of Hendricks and Tippecanoe counties then lying within Indiana Territory
