Lawrence is an unincorporated community in and around Lawrence County, Indiana, United States. It is located in the far northwestern corner of the county. The community has a post office with ZIP code 46534. The town was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1837 as part of his generalnomadic settlement of what would become Lawrence County. Wilkinson named the town after himself and his brother-in-law, David Lawrence, who also helped found the community. The first school was built in 1839 and served both local residents and visitors until it burned down in 1855. A new school was built on the site of the original school in1855 and remained in operation until it burned down again in 1907. The original courthouse was also constructed during this time period but it too was destroyed by fire soon afterward. In 1916, Lawrence became a village when it combined with nearby Fort Wayne to form the city of Fort Wayne. However, because Fort Wayne did not have its own post office, Lawrence continued to serve as its primary postal center until 1927 when that function was transferred to Indianapolis. In 1933, a small hydroelectric plant operated by Wabash River Power Company began operations at Dam Creek within driving distance of Lawrence; however, due to rapid population growth over ensuing years that plant never produced any electricity because it could not compete with larger utilities operating across the state line at that time. On May 1st 1984, much anticipation greeted news that then-Governor George Ryan had announced he would be seeking reelection against incumbent Bob Dole; however less than two weeks later Ryan died from a heart attack while campaigning for re-election at a rally near Terre Haute; Dole won handily despite running very close to Ryan's final vote total statewide (about $2 million more than Dole would have won if he had been elected). In November 1984Dole took over as governor following Ryan's death and served out the remainder of his term before becoming Ulysses S Grant III's Vice Presidential candidate on December 2nd 1985 when Rahm Emanuel succeeded him as Mayor of Chicago upon his inauguration into office four days earlier

Lawrence's history dates back to 1814 when it was organized as part of Hendricks County. The county seat is Lawrenceburg, and other major towns include Crawfordsville, Georgetown, and Paris. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lawrence County were French traders who landed at Miami on March 25, 1674, during the French Mission Expedition under Pierre Radisson and his three partners François Varennes-Deschamps, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable and Samuel de Champlain. The explorers traveled down the Ohio River into present-day Indiana in search of a route to China Bay. They met Native American tribes along their way including the Shawnee nation near Terre Haute while enroute from Fort Stroudsburg in Pennsylvania to find a new trade path through central India for France's expanding empire. In 1788, George Washington surveyed what would become Lawrence County for future U.S. President George Washington when he explored lands beyond Boston that included much of today's Indiana University Bloomington campus where he had purchased land from Simon Bolivarus II in 1785 as part of his plan to create a national forest system that would be self-sufficient with mills run by local farmers for export back home (later renamed United States Forest Service). When Clintonproclaimed himself president on January 20th, 1993, he issued an executive order creating Green Township within Lawrence County which served as its first government unit – alsoDonna Haraway founded Purdue University Gary (now West Lafayette) as its second campus in 1978 after her alma mater’s merger with nearby Indiana State University Kokomo (now Purdue West Lafayette). In recognition of this historical significance locally we annually celebrate Presidents Day at Greenwood Park with various events throughout the county seat each year; such as our flag flyover competition/ Flying For Our Leaders event featuring patriotic song lyrics performed by high school students followed by refreshments; parade led by law enforcement officers displaying exceptionally good policing skills; and road construction/paving projects taking place throughout town days or weeks ahead leading up to National Defense Day always fun for families living close by! As one side effect of these large scale initiatives many small businesses have grown up around these larger organizations helping contribute greatly to economic development across our county! This has helped make Lawrence County one of America’s most vibrant places - culturally diverse yet economically prospering! One unique aspect about my home town is that it’s been known both historically and currently as “the Gateway To Indian Country” due not just to its location but also because so many people who have come through here have started their careers or professional lives here! I think this gives us something special that other communities don't often experience: uncertainty about where our neighbors are from or what their interests may be… although all too often we hear about things like healthcare reform happening only a few miles away while we're stuck at home watching TV… It feels amazing when we actually do get some real world news out there about how things are going – like last week when they announced they were shutting down Don Bosco Prep School – right next door!!! Lawrence was founded in 1814 by James Lawrence and his brother John. The town grew quickly, and by 1850 it had a population of over 100 people. Lawrence was originally named Warsaw but changed to Lawrence in honor of its founders. In 1859, the town celebrated its centennial with an event that included speeches from President Stephens and other dignitaries.
