In 1892, when Indiana became a state, Lawrence became part of nearby Decatur County and remain so ever since. In 1905, when Decatur County merged with neighboring Howard County to form Indianapolis County, much of what is now downtown Decatur (including parts of Lawrencesville) lay within Indianapolis County boundaries at that time. However, because large portions of downtownDecatur were built on property owned by other citizens within IndianapolisCounty limits (such as White Castle restaurant),Lawrence continued to be known as "Lawrenceburg" until 1955 when it changed its name to "Laurie." During this time period, law enforcement activity surrounding the town increased due to concerns about drug trafficking emanating from north central Indiana into Marion County through interstate highways such as I-465/I-465E . In 1969-70 significant renovation projects took place on Central High School which then served as the local school district’s headquarters until 1984 when it moved out into new buildings located adjacent to Don Bosco Catholic High School which still serve today as Central High School’s official campus . Laurie also saw some growth during this time period with numerous restaurants opening up including Mohawk's Restaurant & Bar (opened 1976), Golden Corral Buffet & Saloon (opened 1978), Zinfandel's Wine Cellar & Cafe (opened 1979), Pulaski's Pizza Place (opened 1984), Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet #2 opened 1985 and according to one sourceLocated at 10 N Meridian St NE - Owned by A&W Restaurants Inc., former home of Joe's Pizza - Laurie had over 350 businesses operating at any given point including several dozen bars/restaurants plus dozens more service companies by 1990 having grown faster than any other U S city . Lawrence, Indiana was founded in 1814 by General David Crane. The town was named for General John Lawrence who fought in the Mexican-American War and was Medal of Honor recipient. The first post office in Lawrence was opened on October 11, 1814. The town grew rapidly and by 1827 it had a population of 100 people. In 1836, the town became a full city and it has since grown to over 500 residents.
