Lawrence was founded by Jacob Lawler on December 6, 1836. It was originally named "Lafayette." The first post office was established in Lafayette on November 15, 1837. The first settlers were men from Ohio and Pennsylvania who had come overland from Illinois to start a new life in what would be called the "Wabash Valley." They built log cabins and fished for bass and other fish in the Wabash River until they discovered an even better place to farm: near present-day Lawrenceburg (now part of Terre Haute). In 1840, two brothers – James and George Hinton – bought land north of Lafayette from Jacob Lawler and began developing it into a town. Their new town quickly became known as "Lawrence" after Isaac Lawler's ranching operation there. The early years of Lawrence were difficult; many people died during theIndian Wars fought between General Winfield Scott's army and Chief Tecumseh's forces throughout central Indiana during the late 1800s. However, through hard work, perseverance,andthe aid of friends/family members/relatives alike, many residents made their mark on Lawrence during its formative years. One such individual was John Fenton Welch (1821-1910), who served as mayor from 1861 to 1865 and later as governor of Indiana under Ulysses S Grant (1865-69).
