On May 15, 1851, a group of men from the town of Lake Station, Indiana set out to purchase a rifle scope. The group included John Ransom and George Stephenson. They traveled by wagon to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and then on horseback to Fort Wayne, Indiana. There they bought the scope and rifles. The trip was long but it was informative for the new arrivals in the area.
Lake Station is a small community in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Kosciusko Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded by George Haggerty in 1836 as a trading post on the Libby Fork of the White River. Haggerty named it after his home state of Kentucky, which he had visited while on business in that state. In 1853, Haggerty sold his share of the post to Wm. Fenton and others and it became a village under their ownership and management. In 1865, John Senter purchased land east of town from Wm. Fenton for $4,000 and began construction on what would become the first county jail in Kosciusko County. The jail was completed in 1866 and was used until it was replaced by the current jail building in 1974. According to Village history books published since 1964, "the first store (was) built about 1850 by James Brown." A blacksmith shop also operated there for many years before being destroyed by fire in 1922; however, this story has never been verified with any contemporary records or interviews with surviving owners or employees of that business period. A new store was built west of town around 1920 by Tilton & Sons dry goods merchants; this store continued operations until 1976 when it burned down due to an electrical storm during an ice storm affecting nearby communities such as Goshen and Terre Haute). In 1912-13 school trustees decided to build a new school rather than continue using one existing structure which had not been able to meet their needs since1892-93 when only one room could seat 30 students although funded through subscription money raised from wagonloads brought into town each year for use at Griggsville High School). On May 3rd 1912-13 school trustees voted unanimously ask President William Jankowski if he will bequesting funds from factory manager George Dandridge for building a two-story addition onto original high school lot just north side street between First Street (now Main Street) junction 7th St/8th Ave intersection opposite bank river at present day site now occupied by brick garage next door old Masonic Temple . . . This request resulted into approval as Trustees felt all other schools were meeting same need so additional classroom space would not be necessary at Griggsville High School). Construction began on September 10th 1913 with 1st floor academy open February 1914 Classes started on Monday morning October 8th 1913 Students assembled Friday morning November 6 th 1913 One hundred thirty three students attended initially but enrollment increased to 1507 prior to opening day because parents wanted more space ). For nearly twenty five years (from 1914 – 1918), Lake Station Community School served grades Pre K thru 12 public instruction taking place within Athletics Building located across front field behind Cafeteria classrooms now used as storage area [sic] Allowing plenty of time for children’s development both physically & mentally ) After leaving government service during World War I (1915), Mrs Geo Gable opened her own grocery store near corner First and Second Streets serving local farmers until closed 1980s.) The city limits were set off fromtown Limits early 1900s when Township created Special District boundaries expanding services available within limits without having annexation consideration given (). As township grew larger (& annexed Kokatie Township 1966)), special district boundaries encroached upon village limits so boundary changes were made (+ Braddock Heights 1995)). On December 20 th 1898 Lake Station Village board granted annexation requests from Addison Township (#2) & Greencastle Township (#3) creating today’s unincorporated portion of Kosciusko County inside former township boundaries subject only to limited powers granted hereinbelow .) Today's villages are located entirely inside unincorporated portions governed exclusively by respective governing bodies .) When prohibitionist candidate Arthur Bowen ran for office against incumbent Democrat David Minton on November 2 n 1907 , he received 22% cf 100 votes cast outnumbering Republican candidate John Pugh who received 78%. However no liquor license ever issued contrary thereto., thusBowen likely drank bootleg whiskey obtained clandestinely throughout entire campaign.), residents still consume smuggled alcohol today!

The first settlement in what is now Lake Station, Indiana was made by Captain John Stephenson and his settlers in the early 1800s. The area that is now Lake Station was part of the Shawnee nation before it was ceded to the United States in 1807. The first white person to come to what is now Lake Station was Capt. John Stephenson, who built a cabin on the banks of the current canal in 1808. In 1810, Stephenson married Miss Margaret Coulter and they started a family. They soon moved their home upriver to what is now known as Sharpstown because there were no other suitable locations for them to live. In 1812, Stephenson and his wife founded a school which became an important center for education within the community. After he died in 1818, Mrs. Stephenson continued to run the school until it merged with a local school system in 1830. Mrs . Stephensons legacy can be found throughout Lake Station today with many businesses still named after her including Margaret Stevens School & Conference Center and Stevenson's Store & Restaurant
