In 1892, a general store called the Lake Station Post Office opened in what is nowLake Station. The store was run by Mrs. Fenton and her son, John Fenton. In 1912, the post office moved to its current location on Main Street. In 1916, the United States Postal Service introduced ZIP code 46922 which represented what are now parts of Lucas and Dearborn counties in Indiana. The first mail service within that ZIP code was provided by the Farmers & Merchants National Bank (F&MNB) with a carillon transmitter located at Fort Wayne. On December 3, 1927, the First General Electric Company constructed an electric plant in what is nowLake Station to produce power for local streetlights and other public works projects. That same year saw the opening of one of Lake Station's two grocery stores-the Juhl brothers’ Grist Mill Store (now closed). The store was operated by Mrs. Hennessey until her death in 1951; it reopened as a grocery store under new ownership in 1957 before being closed again in 1978. The town of Lake Station experienced rapid growth after World War II as soldiers returning from Europe brought their homes and businesses with them to join the townspeople in expanding production eastward into nearby Dearborn County and beyond. By 1950, there were more than 100 businesses operating within town limits; however, by 1970 only 30 remained open statewide due to competition from larger towns such as Gary, Indiana or Terre Haute,Indiana
Lake Station is a small community located in Randolph County, Indiana. The community is located on the eastern bank of the Whitewater River. The population was 2,314 as of the 2010 census. The first settlers in Lake Station were two families who came from Pennsylvania in 1837. They built a log cabin on the bluff overlooking the river and began to grow crops and raise livestock. In 1840, they moved their cabin downriver to what is now known as "Red Hill." The stories about this early settlement are recounted by Mr. John Davenport in his book "A History of Randolph County". In 1848, General James Hays arrived at Fort Dearborn with an army and founded that city next to Red Hill on the east side of Whitewater River. He called this new town "Haysville" after himself. This location served as the capital for Randolph County until it was moved to Evansville in 1868. The first post office at Lake Station was established in 1857. It was named for Captain Amos Bradford (1799-1847), who had been commandant of Fort Dearborn when it was founded. Bradford had also been a military officer during Indian Wars and fought against Native American groups such as the Shawnee and Kickapoo Indians near present day Greencastle, Indiana Territory. In 1861, General Edwin Ewing's brigade invaded Kentucky and encountered Confederate forces near Warsaw Summit on July 4th while operations were ongoing south of Louisville (the Battle of Perryville). Aftermath led to increased calls for federal troops stationed around Indianapolis so that local militia could be called up to help quell any possible disturbances should these forces encounter resistance within Indianapolis itself - something which did not happen until 1865 when General Sherman's Union army marched into central Indiana]. On October 10th 1861, President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 9358 calling for all male citizens between eighteen years old and sixty-five years old owning property worth $1,000 or more within five miles of any Ulysses S Grant military installation within six months (this order excluded residents living inside Jefferson Township) to provide proof thereof by vendoring their farms or building sheds or homes along with ten acres lot fronting on either Whitewater River or its tributary rivers since these areas were then subject to Confederate ownership & control (& lots still remain today). Consequently, many farmers here chose instead to arm & fight rather than comply with government orders.] This order motivated many menaced farmers into action; some even decided not to return home after all] As a result, most adults living in Lake Station operated under one roof; several stores/buildings continued serving customers even after government inspectors entered & confiscated goods]. Today there are few reminders left behind from those early days...] Today [in 2010], Lake Station has 2 churches,[one Baptist & one Methodist], three schools[one high school diploma level], one grocery store/couple convenience stores/gas stations[One PerkMart], two restaurants[Carta Italian restaurant & Hi-Ten Steak House] & one bar/nightclub which serves light beer only...Two businesses have closed since 2000:[an auto parts store which closed because OF lack of customers due TO moving production elsewhere& an appliance store which closed because OF fire dangers]...There is no commercial development visible anywhere close by aside from a couple homes recently built...]

Lake Station is a town in Huntington County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,494 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntington Beach–Winamac, California Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Lake Station was John Pritchard who arrived there in 1824. A post office called Pritchardville was established in 1826, but no residents moved to it until 1830. In that year, James Laughlin purchased of land from the Pritchard family and built a cabin there on what would become the town site. Laughlin named his new settlement "Lake Station" after himself and his brother-in-law's home near Clarksville, Kentucky. Laughlin's cabin was replaced by a more permanent structure in 1836 when Elijah Wilkinson bought of land and laid out a village on it which he named "Wilkinsonstown". The first store opened in that settlement on July 1, 1837. By 1840, the town had two stores and ten voters. By 1850, Wilkinsonstown had four stores and twenty voters
Lake Station was founded in 1847 as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The location, at the foot of Mount Rushmore, soon became a point of interest for American abolitionists. In 1863, General Ulysses S. Grant stopped at the station to pick up supplies before his march through Indian Territory.
